The American Revolution was based on a number of ideas and events which led to a political and social separation from Britain and consolidation of former individual colonies into one independent nation. As a former President John Adams said in 1818, The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the hearts and minds of the people. One of the main causes of Revolution was the new financial policy of the British government. After some actions of protest, including the well-known Boston Tea Party, Britain placed the «Coercive Acts» onto the colonies. The Americans responded by forming the Continental Congress and fighting with the British armies. But the war would not end as it did without widespread ideological and material support of both male and female inhabitants. While formal politics did not include women, ordinary domestic behaviors became charged with political significance as women confronted the Revolution, as a war that permeated all aspects of political, civil, and domestic life. Women helped their new country in different ways. Housewives used their purchasing power to support the resistance. Women refused to purchase British goods for use in their homes. Instead of wearing silks or satins they produced their own cloth, weaved and spun. Tea boycott also was a way for a woman to show herself and her household as a part of the patriotic war. They collected funds to assist in the war effort, which Martha Washington then took directly to her husband, General George Washington. In 1780, in the midst of the war, the colonies raised over $340,000 through these female-run organizations. Though most part of women confined their politic views and thoughts to their letters and diaries, but a few women, such as Abigail Adams and Mercy Otis Warren, entered the political arena as public figures. Women also produced goods for soldiers, spied on the British, followed armies as they marched, washed and cooked for soldiers, delivered secret messages, served as nurses and even fought disguised as men. One of the famous women soldiers was Deborah Samson (Sampson). Under the name of Robert Shurtlieff she joined Washingtom army and took part in several battles. Her identity was discovered during the summer of Shortly after she was honorably discharged from the army. She returned to Massachusetts where she married. Two other famous woman, Margaret Corbin and Mary Ludwig Hays didnt disguise. They were camp followers and accompanied their husbands-artillerymen on the battlefield. They were taught how to load and fire cannons. When their husbands were wounded, these brave women stood on the front line and assumed their duties assisting the other artillerymen. But the main role women played as mothers of the new generation which would grow in the new free and democratic country. American mothers were entrusted with giving the ideals of the independent republic to their children, so that the new American Republic could continue to develop and prosper.
