The site has been the official residence of queens and kings from William the Conqueror to the present day. Royals have been born, married and buried in the castle. Windsor castle was built as a wooden fort in the 11the century. In 1992, over 110 rooms in the palace were damaged or destroyed in a fire.

The Round Tower was build in 1779 replacing the Norman wooden building.

Three kings were once imprisoned in the Norman Tower David of Scotland, John of France and James I of Scotland.

The King Henry VIII Gate is the main gate of the castle. It was built in Its decorated with Henry VIIIs symbols – the Tudor rose and pomegranate emblem of his first wife, Catherine Aragon.
