The history of Halloween

On October 31 st people usually celebrate ( ОТМЕЧАЮТ ) Halloween. Its history goes back( В ОСХОДИТ К ) to pre-Christian and Christian customs( ТРАДИЦИЯМ ). Hundreds of years ago people celebrated the Druids festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead and Prince of Darkness. He gathered ( СОБИРАЛ ) the souls ( ДУШИ ) of all died people and sent ( ПОСЫЛАЛ ) them to Druid Heaven ( НЕБО ) on October 31 st. October 31 st was the eve ( КАНУН ) of the Druid New Year. During this day people cooked food and in the evening they dressed up ( ПЕРЕОДЕВАТЬСЯ ) and tried to look like ( ПОХОДИТЬ НА ) the souls of the dead. Then Christianity replaced ( ЗАМЕНИЛО )this tradition. On November 1 st the church ( ЦЕРКОВЬ ) honour( ЧТИТ ) all the hallows( СВЯТЫХ ). This day is called ( НАЗЫВАЕТСЯ ) All Hallows day. The evening before October 31 st became All Hallowss Even – later shortened ( СОКРАЩЕННЫЙ ) to Halloween.
