Here is the river Thames. It runs below the wheel. It is the deepest and most beautiful river in Britain.

The Romans founded London in AD 43. They set up camp and built a bridge over the River Thames. The city gradually grew up alone the banks of the river.

It has served as citadel, palace, prison, mint and menagerie. The White Tower was built in 1078 by William the Conqueror to protect the city.

Once a prison for traitors. The British Crown Jewels are kept here. They have the biggest diamond in the world- the Star of Africa

St.Paul's Cathedral Designed by Christopher Wren, it has the heaviest bell in Britain.

On the corner next to Westminster Bridge stands St. Stephen's Tower, which houses the famous bell, Big Ben, which chimes the hours. A light at the top of the tower at night indicates that parliament is sitting.

Trafalgar Square Left side of the Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square is the most popular place for people to meet. In the middle of the square there is Nelsons Column, which is 51 m high.

The British Museum An outstanding sight of London is the British Museum, which is one of the great museums of the word, showing the works of man from prehistory to the present day. It was founded in 1753.

Baker Street Another interesting museum, which is also at Baker Street, is Madame Tussauds. It contains life-size wax figures of famous people, both living and dead.

St. Jamess Park The air in the parks is full of scents of flowers and plants, between the trees you can see the glittering water.

The city of traditions Outside Buckingham Palace you can see guardsmen dressed in the red uniforms and bearskin hats. These guardsmen protect the Queen. Every day a new guard of thirty guardsman marches to the palace and takes the place of the old guard. This is known as the Changing of the Guards ceremony and it dates back to This colorful ceremony never changes.

The Millennium Dome is probably the most ambitious of all projects. Its the largest building of its kind in the world. Its over 50 meters high and over 300 meters in diameter. It is as high as Nelsons Column

One of the symbols of London is the red double-decker bus. The first bus service was run in London in 1829 and motor buses were first used in 1899.

You can get around the city in a black London taxi Londons black taxis are nearly as famous as its red double- decker buses. They are over 300 years old. In their present form they appeared after the First World War.

Baker Street This address is famous all over the world as the greatest detective Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson lived there for 23 years from 1881 to 1904.

Traveling in London The Underground in London is called the London Underground or, more often, the tube. The Metropolitan line (the oldest one) started working back in 1863.

The London Eye This is the biggest wheel in Britain. It was opened on 1 February 2000 in London. Theres a wonderful view from it.

The Millennium Bridge is a thin blade of steel with wooden decking, connecting the Tate Gallery of Modern Art on Bankside with the steps of St Pauls Cathedral.
