Joshua Reynolds( ) Sir Joshua Reynolds (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was the most well-known portraitist of the second half of 18-th century.

Reynolds was born in Plympton, on July 16 th, As a boy, he came under the influence of Platonistic philosophy, that stayed with him all his life. He was the most important and influential of 18th century English painters, specialising in portraits and promoting the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealisation of the imperfect.

In December 1768 the Royal Academy was founded and Reynolds became its first president. He created a whole gallery of portraits of the most famous people of that period.

He usually painted his characters in heroic observation and showed them as the best people of the nation. Reynolds also was recognized for his portraits of children. He emphasized the innocence and natural grace of children when depicting them.

Although not principally known for his landscapes, Reynolds did paint in this genre. He had an excellent advantage from his house, Wick House, on Richmond Hill, and painted the view in about 1780.

John Constable (1776 – 1837) John Constable (11 June March 1837) was an English Romantic painter. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home - now known as "Constable Country"- which he invested with an intensity of affection.

"I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".

His most famous paintings include Dedham Vale of 1802 and The Hay Wain of Although his paintings are now among the most popular and valuable in British art, he was never financially successful and did not become a member of the establishment until he was elected to the Royal Academy at the age of 52. He sold more paintings in France than in his native England.

Thomas Gainsborough ( ) He was a painter of portraits, fancy pictures, and landscapes as well as one of the most individual geniuses in British art. His portraits are painted in clear tones. Blue and green are his favourite colours.

One of his most famous works is the Portrait of the Dutchess of Beaufort. He managed to create a true impression of the countryside. T.Gainsborough greatly influenced the English school of landscape painting. He was one of the first English artist to paint his native land (Sunset, The Bridge and others) and he did it so sincerely. His works contain much poetry and music. He is sometimes considered the forerunner of the impressionists.

In 1768 he was elected a foundation member of the Royal Academy. Here he further developed the personal style he had evolved at Bath, working with light and rapid brush- strokes and delicate and short-lived colours. He became a favourite painter of the Royal Family, even though his rival Reynolds was appointed King's Principal Painter.

But he was an independent and original genius, able to assimilate to his own ends what he learnt from others, and he relied always mainly on his own resources.

Sir Thomas Lawrence ( ) Sir Thomas Lawrence (April 13, 1769 – January 7, 1830), was a notable English painter, mostly of portraits.

He was born in Bristol. At the age of six Thomas was already being shown off to the guests of the Bear as an infant prodigy who could sketch their likenesses and declaim speeches from Milton.

In 1779 his families bussiness had failed and Thomas's precocious talent began to be the main source of the family's income; he had gained a reputation along the Bath road.

His debut as a crayon portrait painter was made at Oxford, where the young artist soon found himself fully employed in taking crayon likenesses of fashionable people at a guinea or a guinea and a half a head.

In 1794 he was a Royal Academician, and he became the fashionable portrait painter of the age, his sitters including England's most notable people, and ultimately most of the crowned heads of Europe. Caroline of Brunswick was one of his favourite subjects, and is reputed to have been his lover for a time.

In 1815 he was knighted; Everywhere he worked he received flattering marks of distinction from princes, due as much to his courtly manners as to his merits as an artist.

After eighteen months he returned to England, and on the very day of his arrival was chosen president of the Academy in room of Benjamin West, who had died a few days before. He held the office from 1820 to his death.
