In Britain the Queen is the head of State, but in fact she does not rule the country as she has no power. The Queen is the symbol of the country, its history and its traditions. She is very rich. She travels about the United Kingdom, meets different people and visits schools, hospitals and other special places. Queen ELIZABETH II 3

The real power in Britain belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government. The British Parliament has two houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The House of Lords does not have much power but it is very important as it can discuss and change laws, it can delay laws too. The House of Commons makes laws about the policy of the country, taxes and many other things. 4

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and is generally extended to refer to the clock or the clock tower as well. Some believe this extension to be incorrect, but its usage is now entirely commonplace. It is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free- standing clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The clock first ticked on 31 May

Buckingham Palace serves as both the office and London residence of Her Majesty The Queen, as well as the administrative headquarters of the Royal Household. It is one of the few working royal palaces remaining in the world today. 6

During the summer, when the Palace is not being used in its official capacity, visitors can tour the magnificent State Rooms. 7

Westminster Abbey is a working church with a daily cycle of prayer and worship. Its soaring vaults proclaim the unimaginable greatness of God. Christians believe that He is a personal being both within and beyond our everyday world. Like many other great churches, the Abbey is designed in the shape of a cross, recalling the death of Jesus Christ, the source of new life for all who acknowledge Him. 8

Since the crowning of William the Conqueror here in 1066, the Abbey has been the nations Coronation church. It is also the burial and memorial place for many famous historical figures from the last thousand years of British history. 9

Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world, is one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen. The Castle's dramatic site encapsulates 900 years of British history. It covers an area of 26 acres and contains, as well as a royal palace, a magnificent chapel and the homes and workplaces of a large number of people. 10

The ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is unique; an exceptional survival from a prehistoric culture now lost to us. The monument evolved between 3,000 BC and 1,600 BC. It is aligned with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, but its exact purpose remains a mystery. Today, this World Heritage Site is a source of inspiration and fascination and, for many, a place of worship and celebration. 11
