St. Valentines Day – February 14 Ill be your sweetheart, if you will be mine, All of my life Ill be your Valentine… Its here again, the day when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours, and even the office staff will exchange greetings of affection, undying love or satirical comment. St. Valentines Day, February 14, has been a customary day for choosing sweethearts and exchanging love-tokens from time immemorial. The method of choosing sweethearts on St. Valentines Day varied in different times and places. It could be a serious matter, leading to marriage, or it could be a kind of game. Countless generations of young people have acknowledged St. Valentine as the friend and patron of lovers. The custom of celebrating St.Valentines Day can be tread to those festivals, called Lupercalia. There were games and dancing and then each young man drew from an urn the name of the young maiden who would be his sweetheart for the coming year. February 14, the Roman date of the festival, thus became a day for young lovers. After the introduction of Christianity, pagan customs were suppressed, but the festival continued, and in the seventh century it began to be called St.Valentines Day. The origin of the name remains in doubt. Some historians link it to Valentine who became the patron saint of lovers after he was imprisoned by Emperor Claudius for secretly marrying couples contrary to the Emperors order.

This is the legend of how St. Valentines Day began. When the Roman emperor Claudius II needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying because he felt that marriage made men want to stay home instead of fighting wars. Now, a kindly priest named Valentine, seeing the love of young couples, married some secretly. But he was discovered and condemned to death. Even in prison, Valentine showed his love for everyone. His jailer had a young daughter who was blind. And by a miracle, Valentine restored her sight. Just before his death, on February 14, he sent her a farewell message singed From your Valentine. Others say the name is a corruption of the French word galantine (a gallant or beau). And one further theory is that February 14 was chosen because birds traditionally began to mate on that day. Now, February 14 fell in the midst of a Roman Festival called the Lupercalia. When Christianity became the religion of Rome, this joyous day was changed to St. Valentines Day, in honor of the saint who gave his life to help lovers. There are many other legends about how Valentines Day started, and no one knows for sure whether any of them are true. But we do know it is a good day for knock knocks like this: Knock, knock. Whos there? Karen. Karen who? Karen for you.

St. Valentines Day with all of its colorful lore was taken to the New World by the English settlers and lost none of its romantic appeal through the journey. Greeting-cards, usually hand-made by talented colonist, were works of art and beauty. Original verses appeared in carefully penned script on hand-painted cards, and for those unable to write their own verses a printed collection provided ready-made texts for any situation, with answers included. Later cartoons and grotesque drawing replaced the overly romantic valentines and parodies and sardonic rhymes were substituted for sentimental verses. Although the comic valentine has now disappeared and greeting-cards again express affection, the saccharine sentimentally is gone also and the messages are light, gay and sometimes humorous. Loveland, Colorado, is known as a sweetheart of a town in the Rockies. Each year as Valentines Day approaches the Loveland post-office has to recruit a staff of volunteers to help dispatch the 100,000 valentines sent from all over the United States for r ing. When the valentines leave Loveland, in addition to an imprint of Lovelands romantic-sounding name they bear a picture of Cupid wearing a ten- gallon hat, a heart-shaped brand with the letter L and the following verse: Cupid, work your magic From your secret mountain shrine, And touch your wand of romance To each lovers valentine. The volunteers carefully hand-stamp Cupid and the poetry on each envelope before sending it out as a valentine.

Whatever the origin, Valentines Day has had a long and romantic history. The Roman conquerors carried the celebration to England, where pagan and Christian customs combined to form some of the enduring traditions. One was that the first person you saw on Valentines Day would be your valentine. We know the custom was well established in Shakespeares time, for Ophelia wanted to be betime at Hamlets window. She sang: To-morrow is Saint Valentines day. All in the morning betime, And I a maid at your window, To be your valentine! The modern way in which this is done is through the sending of Valentine cards on this day, as a token of love to a person of the opposite sex, unsigned, of course. There are all kinds of cards to suit all tastes. Young men and women in the last century spent hours fashioning a home-made card and some of these cards can still be seen in the museums of Britain today. The habit of sending presents is dying out, but cards can be very expensive. Pearl necklaces and diamond Brooches in pretty boxes, decorated with fancy ribbons, entwined hearts, gold arrows, roses, cupids, rhymes, sick sentiment and satire – all are on display in the stores and stationers shops.

How is this holiday celebrated in Britain nowadays? School children decorate their classrooms with bright red paper hearts and celebrate the day in their schools. They also make valentine cards for their friends and parents. At present St.Valentines parties the slips of paper with names written on are dropped into a Valentine box. It is usually a cardboard box decorated with white lace, red hearts and blue forget-me-nots. It has also become traditional to put verses into the Valentine box. Everybody will have a lot of fun in reaching into the box and reading such unpretentious lines. Valentines Day is a day to share loving feelings with friends and family. It has become traditional for many couples to become engaged on this day. This is a happy day because it is specially dedicated to celebrated love, affection and friendship.

Nowadays there is a wide-spread custom of sending greeting cards or gifts to express affection. Every February 14 millions of people send Valentines to those whom they love. The cards, known as Valentines are often designed with heart to symbolize love. Valentine cards are usually decorated with symbols of love and friendship. These symbols were devised many centuries ago. Lace symbolizes a net for catching ones heart. If you get a Valentine with a piece of lace you may understand that the person who sent it must be crazy about you. A symbol should have several meanings, so some experts maintain that lace stands for a bridal veil. A ribbon means that the person is tied up, while hearts, which are the most common romantic symbol, denote eternal love. Red roses are also often used as a love emblem. Red is a symbol of warmth and feelings. This is the reason that red roses have long been a symbol of love. Pink is a mixture of red and white and is quite commonly used also. White is the symbol of purity and is a colour often used in valentines,Cupid, the roman god of love, has also become one of the most famous Valentine symbols. Cupid is traditionally depicted as a charming boy with a bow and arrows. He was a perfect archer and was said to shoot his arrows into the human hearts. The wounded persons immediately fell in love. The Endless – Love Knot, also called the True – Love Knot, is usually an intricate pattern of interlocking hearts that is generally hand-drawn. It is not so easy to invent the True – Love Knot of your own, but true love can create miracles!

Words by Larry Morey Music by Frank Churchill Some day my prince will come, Some day Ill find my love, And thrilling that moment will be, When the prince of my dreams comes to me. Hell whisper I love you. And steal a kiss or two though hes far away Ill find my love some day Some day when my dreams come true. Some day Ill find my love, Some one to call my own, And Ill know her the moment we meet, For my heart will start skipping a beat. Some day well say and do things We,ve been longing to though shes far away Ill find my love some day Some day when my dreams come true Some Day My Prince Will Come

A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody. Between friends all is common. (У друзей – все пополам.) Friendship cannot always stand on one side. (Дружба должна быть взаимной.)

Storyteller: Cupid was the son of a beautiful Goddess Venus. Wherever Venus went Cupid went too. He was a merry little guy and liked to see people happy. Cupid went around shooting gold- tipped arrows into the hearts of humans. As soon as the arrow hit them they fell in love. Venus, Cupids mother, had a golden mirror. She looked into the mirror every day. Venus: (is looking at herself in the mirror. The other girl is doing the same gestures – she is her mirror). I look into the mirror And whom do I see? Somebody that looks Just like me. When I smile That somebody smiles too. She seems to follow Everything I do. (music) (They dance together. The mirror disappears in the dance. Venus sits down crying. Cupid appears.) Cupid: Whats wrong? Whats happened, my dear? Whats the matter? Why are you crying so bitterly? Venus: I am crying because Ive lost my golden mirror! Oh my golden mirror. Where is it? Ive lost it. Its gone… I turn and she turns, I curtsy and she curtsies, I stand and she stands. And if I run away, Away will run she. And do you know why? Because she is really me. Mirror, mirror on the wall Who is the fairest of all? Cupid, Venus and her Mirror

Cupid: Youve lost your golden mirror? Please dont… please dont cry. I am going to search for your golden mirror. (music) I looked here, I looked there, but the mirror was nowhere to be found. Storyteller: Then Cupid flew over the meadow where some sheep were grazing. Among them a shepherd stood. Cupid: Oh, whats that? Beams of lights are flashing up into my eyes. Whats that? Oh, I see that light is coming from something in the shepherds hand. Whats that? Stop that! Stop! Dont…! Oh, its my mothers golden mirror! (cries) How could he dare to look at his ugly face in my mothers golden mirror! I must take the mirror away from him! (He pulls a cracker, confetti are falling down) Storyteller: He struck the mirror from the shepherds hands. It fell to the ground and broke into hundreds of golden pieces. Plants with beautiful blossoms sprang up where the mirror was broken. Later People called the flowers Venus Looking Glass. (music, flowers dance) The Song Edelweiss The Song Edelweiss Edelweiss, Edelweiss, Every morning your greet me Small and white Clean and bright You look happy to meet me Blossom of snow, may you bloom and glow. Bloom and grow forever. Edelweiss, Edelweiss, Bless my homeland forever.

Storyteller: They say, flowers are the symbols of beauty and love. So people give flowers on Valentines Day, to show their love and affection. Valentine Card: Whatever the odd mixture of origins, Saint Valentines Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day when you show your friend or lover how much you love and care about them. You can send candies or flowers to someone you think special. Most people send me, Valentine Card. (music) Teacher: (has a box with some special things: a fan, a piece of lace, a red mitten, coins, a ring, a ribbon, etc.) There are many symbols on Valentine Cards. And each has its special meaning. A fan shows that you open your heart to a person you love. A ribbon shows that you want to be tied to another special person. A ring is a symbol of love and binding to another person. When a man gives a ring to a woman they are engaged. Lace shows that you want a special person to be caught in the net of your heart. A red mitten is a sign that you dont like someone. So when a person gives you a red mitten he says I dont like you. A coin shows you will marry a wealthy person. So if someone gives you a coin he/she is wishing you to be wealthy. Now lets repeat some expressions. I love you. Im crazy about you. I dont like you. I dont care about you. Im in your net.

Disneys Beauty And The Beast Once upon a time there was a spoiled, selfish young prince who lived in a shining castle with many servants. One winter night an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered the prince a single red rose in return for shelter from the cold. The prince turned her away. To punish the prince, the old woman transformed him into a horrible creature, with filthy fur, long fangs, and sharp claws, and changed all his servants into objects. She left a rose with him. If he could learn to love another and earn her love in return before the rose withered, the spell would be broken. If not, he would remain a beast forever! Many years passed. In a nearby village, there lived a young woman named Belle. She was the kindest and most beautiful girl in the village. Although she spent most of her time taking care of her father, Maurice, a hardworking but unsuccessful inventor, she loved to read more than anything else. In this same village there also lived a handsome hunter named Gaston who was struck by Belles beauty and sweetness. Story adapted by Michael Teitelbaum

He always boasted to the townspeople that he was going to marry Belle, but Belle was not interested in him. One day Belles father went to the fair. Maurice and Philippe, the family horse, entered the dark forest and soon lost their way. Suddenly they were attacked by a pack of wolves. Maurice was thrown to the ground, and Philippe galloped back toward the village. Maurice ran from the wolves until he reached the open gate of a scary-looking castle. He dashed inside and pulled the gate closed just before the wolves could reach him. Inside the old castle, Maurice was amazed. All the objects he saw could speak! You are lucky to have escaped those wolves, said Lumiere, the very polite candelabra. You are alive! exclaimed Maurice. Thats incredible! Shhh, be quiet! Warned Cogsworth, the fussy old mantelclock. Youll wake the Master! Care for some tea? asked Mrs.Potts, the teapot. She served Maurice a nice hot cup of tea. But as Maurice sipped his tea the dining room door flew open, and there stood the Beast. What are you doing here? roared the Beast. Before Maurice could explain, he was locked up in the Beasts dungeon. Meanwhile, back in the village, Philippe came galloping up to Belles house. Whats wrong, Philippe? asked Belle. Wheres Papa? Belle jumped onto Philippe and rode off to find her father. Philippe brought Belle to the forest as fast as he could. Through the mist, Belle saw the old castle gates. Fearfully, she went inside. Soon all the objects knew about Belle.

Shes the one, said Lumiere. The girl who has come to break the spell! Belle found Maurice in the dungeon. Papa! she cried. A shadow fell over Belle. When she turned around, she was face-to-face with the Beast! Belle agreed to stay as the Beasts prisoner in return for her fathers freedom. Heartbroken, Maurice left the castle. Back in town, Maurice ran to the local tavern to tell the townspeople about Belle and the Beast. No one believed him. Gaston was in the tavern, too. Hmm, he thought. Everyone thinks the old man is crazy. That gives me an idea that can force Belle to be my wife! While the Beast was away from the castle, Belle ran from the Beasts castle. When she reached the dark and misty forest, she was suddenly attacked by the wolves. From out of nowhete appeared the Beast. No match for his incredible strength, the wolves soon ran off into the forest. Belle was safe. Youre wounded! cried Belle when she came over to thank the Beast for saving her life. Here, let me help you back to the castle. Belle nursed the Beast back to health, and the two began to grow fond of each other. He showed Belle his huge library, and she spent hours reading books to him. She showed him proper table manners, and even taught him to dance. Slowly, the Beast was becoming more human, and with every day, Belles affection for him grew. The Beast showed Belle his magic mirror. With it, he could see anywhere in the world. When Belle asked to see her father, she saw that he was very sick and lost in the woods, searching for her. Belle asked to visit her father and the Beast let her go him. The Beast let Belle keep his magic mirror. She found her father and took him home.

Suddenly Gaston showed up with a crowd of townspeople. If you do not marry me, he whispered to Belle, Ill prove for all that your father is crazy, with his ravings about a beast! But there is a beast! said Belle. And Ill never marry you! Belle used the mirror to show the Beast. The Beast is dangerous! cried Gaston. He will come and attack your children. Come with me! He must be destroyed! Gaston led the townspeople to attack the Beast. When Belle reached the castle, she found Gaston in the Beasts powerful grip. The two were on the castles roof. When the Beast saw Belle, he remembered the kindness and mercy she had taught him. Gaston pulled out a knife and stabbed the Beast in the back. As the Beast howled in pain Gaston lost his footing on the slippery roof and tumbled off. Belle rushed over to the Beast as the final petal was about to fall from the rose. I love you! whispered Belle. Magically, the wounded Beast turned back into a healthy, handsome prince. All of the objects in the castle became human beings again, too, and Belle and the prince lived happily ever after!
