PUMPKIN BAT WITCH GHOSTCANDLE

TEXTS The origin of Halloween The origin of the Halloween dates back 2000 years ago to the Celtic Feast of the Dead. A Celtic Festival was held on November, 1, the first day of the Celtic New Year, honouring Samhain, the Lord of Death. As the story goes, the spirits of the people who have died during the preceding year come back to our world to search for the new bodies to possess for the following year. It is their only hope for life after death. Celts believed that all the laws of nature stopped to work at that time, so the spirits could return to the world of the living. Obviously, people didnt want to be possessed, so, on the night of October, 31, they extinguished fires at their homes, for the spirits didnt want to enter cold houses. They also dressed in an ugly manner and marched along the streets to frighten the spirits. Halloween spread throughout Europe in the 17 th century. It began with All Hallows Eve, the Night of the Dead. The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840s by Irish immigrants.

Heroes of Halloween The pumpkin is a necessary attribute. The European custom also included the lighting of pumpkins with scary faces to ward off evil spirits, especially spirits who roamed the streets and country during All Hallows Eve. The hollowed – out and carved pumpkin with an ember inside is called Jack – o – Lantern. The Jack – o – Lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack tricked Satan – forcing the Devil to help him stop drinking; he carved a cross on a tree on which he had asked Satan to climb and made a deal with the devil. After Jack died, he could enter neither Heaven nor Hell because of his deal. But the devil gave him an ember to light the way through the darkness that was put in a hollowed – out pumpkin to keep it glowing longer. Another heroes of Halloween are witches, bats, ghosts and others.

The celebration The obligatory Halloween custom, trick – or treating, is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts but from a 9 th century European custom called souling. On November, 2, All Souls Day, early Christians walked from village to village begging for soul cakes, made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more cakes they got, the more prayers they promise to say. This tradition is believed to be the most significant on Halloween. Children walk from house to house and ask for treating. If the hosts dont give them it, children play tricks on the hosts. Thats why children say trick or treat. Another tradition is singing a Halloween song.
