Halloween Halloween

The History Halloween is a combination of holidays. As a night of ghosts and witches it was started by the Celts. They were people who lived in France and the British Isles hundreds of years ago. The Celts had a holiday called Samhain which meant «end of summer». So it was a festival marking the end of the foodgrowing season. The Celts believed that spirits of the fruit and vegetables and also the ghosts of people, visited the earth on Samhain, which was October 31. The Celts lit huge bonfires on hill tops to scare the ghosts away Halloween is a combination of holidays. As a night of ghosts and witches it was started by the Celts. Traditions and Customs In the evening of October 31 boys and girls «dress up» in different old clothes and wear masks. As the night is usually quite dark they take with them a lantern made from a pumpkin. On an empty pumpkin they cut out slits for two years, a nose and a mouth and put a lighted candle inside. The pumpkin then looks like a jeering face with burning eyes. The children go from house to house and knock on the doors, calling «trick or treat». The Symbol According to the legend, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. He was forced to wander around the earth with a single candle to light his way. The candle was placed in a turnip to keep it burning longer. When the Irish came to America they adopted the pumpkin instead of the turnip. Along with these traditions, they brought the idea that the black cat was considered by some to be reincarnated spirits who had prophetic abilities. Christmas Day This is the favourite day for all children. They wake up very early in the morning to find their stockings have been filled by Father Christmas and excitedly unwrap the presents before going down to breakfast. Family presents are opened either late morning or during the afternoon. The family gather together to open the presents found under the Christmas tree. The tradition of giving gifts is thought to be related to the gifts that the wise men (the Magi) brought to Jesus. Many people will go to church to sing carols and to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day. More people attend the church on this day than any other day of the year. A traditional feature of Christmas afternoon is the Queen's Christmas Message. At three o'clock in the afternoon, the Queen gives her Christmas Message to the nation which is broadcast on radio and television. The custom was begun by King George V in 1932.

Santa Claus Father Christmas is our version of Santa Claus. He is an old jolly man with white hair, a beard and a moustache. He is dressed in a red suit outlined in white. Father Christmas and his elves make all the toys for Christmas in his home in the North Pole. The red coat is 'new'. Images of Father Christmas prior to about 1880 most pictures showed him with a green coat. The red became the most popular colour after the US introduction by Coca Cola during the 1930s.Father Christmas was originally part of an old English midwinter festival, normally dressed in green, a sign of the returning spring. Santa Claus, the man we know today dressed in red, became known in England during the 1870's. His name comes from the Dutch name for St. Nicholas which is Sinter Klaas. Children write letters to Father Christmas to tell him what they would like for Christmas. Some children will send their letters by post or but the more traditional way is to throw the letters into the back of the fireplace. The draught then carries the letters up the chimney to Father Christmas. On Christmas eve Father Christmas piles all of the toys onto his sleigh and rides across the sky with his reindeers. The most famous one is Rudolf, the reindeer at the front who leads the way with his red nose. He enters our houses down the chimney at midnight and places presents for the children in stockings (large socks) or bags by their beds or in front of the family Christmas tree.

Christmas Eve dinner Christmas Eve dinner is meatless but festive. The most important ingredient is a special porridge called kutya. It is made of wheat berries or other grains which symbolize hope and immortality, and honey and poppy seeds which ensure happiness, success, and untroubled rest. A ceremony involving the blessing of the home is frequently observed. The kutya is eaten from a common dish to symbolize unity. Some families used to throw a spoonful of kutya up to the ceiling. According to tradition, if the kutya stuck, there would be a plentiful honey harvest. Christmas Eve dinner is meatless but festive. The most important ingredient is a special porridge called kutya. Christmas Day - January 7 St. Nicholas is especially popular in Russia. The legend is that the 11th- century Prince Vladimir traveled to Constantinople to be baptized, and returned with stories of miracles performed by St. Nicholas of Myra. Since then many Eastern Orthodox Churches have been named for the saint, and to this day, Nicholas is one of the most common names for Russian boys. The feast of St. Nicholas (December 6) was observed for many centuries, but after the communist revolution, the celebration of the feast was suppressed, only to return after the fall of Communism. Christmas trees were also banned by the Communist regime and were replaced by "New Year's" trees. St. Nicholas is especially popular in Russia. The Krestny Khod For many Russians, a return to religion represents a return to their old roots and their old culture. Throughout Russia, after Christmas Eve services, people carrying candles, torches, and homemade lanterns parade around the church, just as their grandparents and great-grandparents did long ago. The Krestny Khod procession is led by the highest-ranking member of the Russian Orthodox Church. After the procession completes its circle around the church, the congregation reenters and they sing several carols and hymns before going home for a late Christmas Eve dinner. Decorations To celebrate Jesus' birthday on Christmas Day many people decorate their homes. Red and green are the traditional colours of Christmas. Green represents the continuance of life through the winter and the Christian belief in eternal life through Jesus. Red symbolizes the blood that Jesus shed at His Crucifixion. In the weeks leading up to and during Christmas, people hang decorations in their homes. These decorations are made of coloured paper and foil. People will also hang greenery around the house, such as holly and ivy. The needlelike points of holly leaves are thought to resemble the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when He was crucified. The red berries symbolise the drops of blood Jesus shed. Towns and cities decorate their streets with colourful lights. Most houses in England, will have a tree of some sort or other which they will decorate and will place the presents under. The traditional tree is a fir tree but now-a-days more people buy artificial trees to 'save the earth'. The decorating of the tree is usually a family occasion, with everyone helping.
