How old is the Earth? The Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old! In honor of our planet, former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson decided we needed a special day to celebrate and learn how to care for our environment. He wrote letters to many schools to help spread the word about the day he planned because he knew kids would help. On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. Many environmental laws were passed, and people all over the country made promises to protect the environment. Since then, Earth Day has spread around the world and people are working together to create cleaner air and energy to take care of Mother Nature.

Greenpeace is an organization founded in Canada in 1971 as an offshoot of the "Don't Make A Wave Committee." In 1970, the Committee was established with the sole objective of stopping a second nuclear bomb test by the United States military in Alaska. Factories, electric power plants and cars are making a lot of gases. These new gases are trapping more and more of the sun's heat. This is called greenhouse effect or global warming.

When rain is acidic, it affects what it falls on: trees, lakes, buildings and farmland. Industrial countries should control their levels of pollution. This is already happening in some parts of Europe. There, several countries have cut their acid rain pollution by 30 %. Governments in rainforest countries need to plan and work together. They should also protect certain areas and plant new forests.

Now we are making so mush garbage that in many places there is not enough room to bury it all. We have to act fast and cut down the amount of garbage we make.

We can recycle materials instead of throwing them away. This way we'll produce a lot less garbage and help keep our planet clean.

1. Писати на аркуші паперу з обох боків. 2. Не користуватись аерозолями і спреями. 3. Заварювати листковий чай, а не в пакетиках. 4. Наливати в чайник води стільки, скільки потрібно для одного разу. 5. Завжди закривати каструлю кришкою під час приготування їжі (економить до 30 % енергії).

6. Сказати "ні" пластиковому посуду (розкладання 450 років). 7. Купувати напої в скляній тарі. 8. Для покупок використовувати паперові сумки чи кульки, або виготовлені з натуральних тканин. 9. Повертати в супермаркет пластикові пакети для повторного використання. 10. Цукерки, печиво та інші продукти купувати на вагу, а не в окремій обгортці.

11. Класти в магазині декілька різних продуктів в один кульок. 12. Носити в сумці пакетик для сміття. 13. Сортувати сміття. 14. Здавати макулатуру, металобрухт. 15. Прибирати сміття після відпочинку на природі.

16. Для миття посуду використовувати натуральні речовини. 17. Відмовитись від ванни, а приймати душ. 18. Зменшити кількість миючих засобів. 19. Не використовувати гель для душу, а мило (органічна косметика). 20. Використовувати універсальний миючий засіб для миття, прання, чищення.

21. Збирати прання до повного завантаження пральної машини. 22. Під час прання кидати в пральну машину каучукові м'ячики (економить до 20 % порошку). 23. Поставити цеглину в зливний бачок (із 150 л питної води, 30 л йде в каналізацію). 24. Для виділення важливої інформації використовувати олівці, а не маркери. 25. Вимикати воду коли чистиш зуби.

26. Для поливу використовувати дощову воду. 27. Здорове харчування. 28. Вибирати продукти з написами ВІО, ЕСО. 29. Купувати лише сезонні овочі та фрукти. 30. Купувати фрукти і овочі не в посередників, а безпосередньо у виробника.

31. Вирощувати органічні продукти (відмовитись від гербіцидів). 32. Йогурт виготовляти в домашніх умовах (без упакування). 33. Ніколи не залишати електроприлади в режимі очікування. 34. Використовувати енергозберігаючі лампочки. 35. Вимикати світло коли виходиш з кімнати.

36. На ніч вимикати опалювальні пристрої. 37. Носити еко-одяг. 38. Давати старим речам нове життя (обмін вживаним одягом). 39. Виготовляти аксесуари своїми руками. 40. Користуватись громадським транспортом, а не власним авто.

41. Більше їздити на велосипеді. 42. Якщо відстань невелика, йти пішки (за перший км шляху машина забруднює атмосферу в 2 рази більше). 43. Сходи, а не ліфт. 44. Виготовляти іграшки власними руками. 45. Більше вазонів.

46. Посадити дерево. 47. Вечеряти при свічках. 48. Електромобілі (дороги, що заряджають електромобілі). 49. Еко-будинки. 50. Зелені будинки.
