Komsomolsk – on – Amure, the second largest and second most important city in Khabarovsk territory, is the largest manufacturing center in the Russian Far East as well as being a research and cultural center. As a result of its advantageous geographic location at the intersection of the Trans – Siberian railroad and the Baikal – Amur mainline, the city is a center for the most important transportation lines which connect the regions of Russia farther in land with the countries of the Pacific Rim. The city was founded in 1932 and it is situated on the left bank of the Amur River in a valley with a picturesque landscape and favorable geological and engineering conditions, 270 kilometers north of Khabarovsk. City in the seasonal colors. Each season in the Amur region is wonderful in its own way. The unique nature of the Far East and the unmatched beauty of the mighty Amur leave an indelible impression on all who visit our city for the first time.

Spring Spring in the city arrives late and lasts about a month – and – a – half. This is a time of nature's awakening from its winter's sleep, a time of ice flows down the Amur and the appearance of the first forest flowers.

Summer Summer is the warmest season, when the temperatures can reach 35`C. Bright sun, the coolness of the Amur, and an abundance of flowers and greenery create is a restful atmosphere for the city and its visitors. In addition, the city celebrates its birthday in the summer, on June 12 th.

Autumn Autumn is appropriately called golden. The unmatched beauty of the autumn taiga is painted in all colors. At this time it is the rich harvest of the gifts of nature occurs. The major event in autumn is salmon fishing.

Winter Winter is the longest season. It lasts almost five months. Temperatures dip down to - 35`C are common, and that during the sunniest time of the year. Nowhere in Russia there are as many sunny winter days as in Amur region.

Industrial activity Komsomolsk -on- Amur is the largest industrial and transportation center in the Russian Far East with a well developed manufacturing and social infrastructure, and a network of educational, research and engineering institutions. Relatively favorable living conditions have determined the city's status as the population center where more people have relocated than any other city in the Russian Far East. Komsomolsk is located un the middle of a province among the foremost in Russia in reserves and accessibility of natural resources. So far commercial utilization has been insignificant, permitting the city to be counted among those Russian Far East cities with the highest potential for development. The city's economic base is manufacturing with accounts for 80% of the city's total volume of goods and services, 62% of the productive assets of the city, and employs 42% of the city's work force. Machine works from the largest sector of the manufacturing base-75%, with metallurgy 10%, and oil refining and chemical production-12%.Other industries include food processing, light manufacturing, construction and others.

There are nearly forty manufacturing enterprises, including the Amur shipbuilding plant, an aircraft, «Amurstal»- the Far East's foremost metallurgical plant, machine works («Amurlitmash»- shot blast equipment, lifting and moving equipment, etc )an oil refinery, saw mills a furniture factory and a construction material plant. These businesses produce the most diverse products, including ocean- going vessels, aircraft, steel and sheet metal, batteries, cranes, gasoline, metal castings, garments, food products and many others. Most enterprises are initiating programs for new production targeted at both domestic and export markets. Many businesses have adopted the stockholder corporation form, and the number of privatized firms grows constantly.

Auto ways branch out from the city. Direct air service is available to Moscow, Khabarovsk, Yuzhno- Sakhalinsk and Nikolayevsk-on- Amure. River transport is important for Komsomolsk. Routes run up and down the Amur. The city's river port has 14 passenger gates and six cargo piers with a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, and the port accepts river and ocean vessels of to 6,000 ton displacement.

Education The city has 44 secondary schools providing general education with a total enrollment of 47,000 students. Six children's homes and five boarding schools raise and educate 1,700 orphaned children. 13,000 children attend 110 pre- school / child care facilities where many learning programs are provided for them. Eleven post-secondary institutions have a combined enrollment in study groups and sections of more than 13,000.

Public health Today ever resident of the city can receive a full range of high quality medical care. Preventative medicine clinics practice contemporary diagnostic procedures, including computer aided diagnosis. Those requiring it receive high- quality medical treatment.

Cultural life The city has a wonderful drama theater, Eight theatrical workshops and five movie theaters. The city's fine art museum contains works of various generations of master painters, a significant number of whom are from Komsomolsk – on- Amure. Art and other cultural exhibits are regularly organized jointly with the city branch of Artist's Union of Russia. Over 2,000 children are enrolled in the city's four music and three art academies. Seven Palaces and Houses of Culture attract citizens to leisure activities, including the celebration of traditional popular holidays.

Sport and recreation Physical culture and sports enjoy quite a popularity among Komsomolsk's citizens. A passion for sports arose in the earliest days of the building of the city. As housing and factories were put up, sports fields and their competitions immediately sprang up beside. As early as 1937 during the celebration of the city's fifth anniversary, a group of five courageous bicyclists set out from the new sports stadium on the banks of the Amur to carry the city fathers` report to Moscow. There are currently at the disposal of the city's sports enthusiasts four stadiums, five swimming pools, around ten ski areas and 80 school gyms. Future champions take up sports at nine youth sport complexes, offering nineteen kinds of sports training, and at the sports clubs for young mariners and hikers. Thirty –nine thousand of the city's residents are active in sports, and among them are 6,800 children.
