Ancient Olympics The Olympic Games are an international sports festival that began in ancient Greece. In those days Greek games took place every four years. They included not only sports competitions but also competitions in music, oratory and theatre performances.

Ancient Olympics The earliest information about the Olympic Games goes back to 776 ВС. The ancient Olympics had only one athletic event a footrace or a race for runners of about 183 metres (the length of the stadium).

Ancient Olympics Only men could compete or watch the Games. During the Games there was peace in the country. The winners of the Games became national heroes! For 1000 years the Games were at regular intervals of four years.

When the Greeks were conquered by the Romans in the second century B.C. a decline of the Games began. In A.D. 393, the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games.

Emperor Theodosius ordered the total destruction of Olympia's temples because he thought that they were a pagan festival.

Revival of the Modern Games At the end of the nineteenth century a Frenchman called Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided to try to revive the Olympic Games. At that time, Europe was divided by wars. Coubertin thought that the Olympic Games could help to bring peace. He thought highly of sport. He described the Olympic spirit in the following words: "The important thing is not winning but taking part." These words are still remembered today.

Revival of the Modern Games Coubertin believed very strongly that sportsmen must not compete for money, but for glory (слава) and for the honour of their country.

At first nobody was interested in his ideas. But Coubertin did not give up and worked hard. In 1894 he formed the International Olympic Committee.

On 5 April 1896 in Athens, Greece, the Olympic Games began again, after nearly fifteen centuries. They were a success. Athletes from thirteen countries came to Greece to compete in nine sports.

Russia took part in them, too.

Since then the Olympic Games have become the most important sports event in the world.

Like in ancient times, the Olympic Games take place every four years, but were interrupted in 1916, 1940 and 1944 by World Wars.

The second Olympic Games took place in Paris, France. It was at the Paris Games that women were first allowed to compete.

The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. The tradition of the Winter Olympic Games also began.

Symbols In 1913 Coubertin found an emblem of five linked rings. They became a symbol of the Olympic Games. These five rings represent five parts of the world: Europe, America, Australia, Africa, Asia.

The Olympic Flag The five coloured rings on a white field form the Olympic Flag. The colours: white, red, blue, green, yellow and black, were chosen because each nation has at least one of these colours in its national flag.

The Olympic Motto is "Swifter, Higher,Stronger."

The Olympic Creed The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.

The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.

The Olympic Flame Prior to each Games, the Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia, Greece and brought to the host city by runners carrying the torch in relay.

There it plays an important role in the Opening Ceremonies. The flame has been an Olympic symbol since 1928.

The Olympic mascot The Olympic mascot, an animal or human figure representing the cultural heritage of the host country, was introduced in It has played an important part of the Games since 1980 with the debut of Misha, a Russian bear.
