Limerick a type of light verse (poetry that lacks serious intent) and a particularly popular fixed verse form in English. It usually consists of five predominantly anapaestic lines rhyming aabba 12

Limerick The origin of the term is obscure. There is one theory that it was an OF form brought to the Irish town of Limerick in 1700 by soldiers returning from the French war. Another that it originated in the nursery rhymes published in Mother Gooses Melody (c. 1765). A third that it stems from the refrain 'Will you come up to Limerick?' sung at convivial gatherings where such nonsense verses were fashionable. 13
