WHAT IS PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING?

Public Service Broadcasting (PSB)is broadcasting made, financed and controlled by the public, for the public. It is neither commercial nor state- owned, free from political interference and pressure from commercial forces.

Public Service Broadcasting is a state owned entity. Public Service Broadcasting is usually viewed as a servive that promotes the interest of the state. The kind of programs shown highlight cultural diversity of a country, and acquaint them with traditional arts, crafts and music.

Public broadcasting includes radio, television and other electronic media outlets whose primary mission is public service.

The BBC is the world's leading public service broadcaster. Its mission is to enrich people's lives with programmes that inform, educate and entertain Established by a Royal Charter, the BBC is a public service broadcaster funded by the licence fee paid by UK households.

We use the income from the licence fee to provide services including 10 national TV channels plus regional programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and an extensive website. BBC World Service broadcasts to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 27 languages and world service English language.

BBC also has a commercial arm, BBC Worldwide as well as a number of other commercial ventures. Profits from these activities are returned to the BBC for investment in new programming and services. Around the world, there are separate commercial ventures whose profits help fund BBC public services, including BBC Worldwide, and BBC World News.

The current BBC Royal Charter says that the BBC should be funded by the fees paid for TV licences. If you watch or record TV programmes as theyre broadcast you will need a TV licence.

In India, Prasar Bharati is India's public broadcaster. However it does have commercial advertising on it. It is an autonomous corporation of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (India),Government of India and comprises the Doordarshan television network and All India Radio. Prasar Bharati was established on 23 November 1997, following a demand that the government owned broadcasters in India should be given autonomy like those in many other countries. The Parliament of India passed an Act to grant this autonomy in 1990, but it was not enacted until 15 September 1997.
