September 6, 1953 in Semipalatinsk on the basis of Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Order of the Ministry of Health opened the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute.

In 1959 the first graduation of young specialists (275 graduates). In 1963 was inaugurated the pediatric faculty in 1982 in Pavlodar the faculty of advanced training of doctors and in 1991 organized by the Faculty of Dentistry. In 1998, the first time in Kazakhstan began training foreign students in English.

In 1997, the Medical Institute was transformed into the Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy. In 2009, the college received university status, the official name was changed to the State Medical University of Semey.
