1870. In the Paris theater, just bought by two businessmen, a scandal. In the theater often there are accidents, which the rumor connects with a certain "Phantom of the Opera". The prima donna of an opera, refuses in such conditions to fulfill the role (after on it the decoration falls), and it is replaced by an unknown choir woman. Cristina's performance has a resounding success, instantly turning it into a new opera star. A friend of her childhood comes to congratulate the girl, who feels warm feelings towards her. But Christina hides from him, what is the secret of her success. She was taught by a mystery teacher, whom she calls "the angel of music". It seems to her that this is the spirit of her late father

After the meeting with Raul, in the mirror she is the shadow of a masked man hypnotizing her with her voice and forcing him to follow him to the catacombs under the theater through the secret passage behind the mirror. This is the "angel of music", he is also the "Phantom of the Opera". He is delighted with the performance of his student. But when she removes the mask from the Ghost, he becomes enraged, although he manages to close his face with his hands.

In the meantime, there is a stir in the theater: everyone is shocked by the disappearance of their new star and from the threatening letters sent to them by the Ghost. At the same time, they enjoy the hype that this creates around their theater, attracting the public. In one of the letters, the Ghost demands that Christina be appointed to the main role in the new comedy, Il Muto, and as for the theater, he takes the silent role of the page. The firm proudly refuses to follow his instructions, and distribute the roles to the exact opposite.

During the premiere of "Il Muto", the Ghost appears in the hall, on a lighting stage, incidentally killing the illuminator who prevented him. Replacing the bottle with a spray, he deprives me of accepting the opera voice, forcing it to be on the stage. And the management of the theater is forced to accept its conditions. But Christina is no longer fascinated by her "angel", she is afraid of him, turned into a single-minded assassin. She begs Raul for protection, and he swears he will always be there. The ghost who sees this suffers from grief and jealousy.

A year passes. "The opera opens a new season, and the Phantom of the Opera has not been heard for a year already. All actors amicably celebrate at the masquerade. At the height of the holiday, the Ghost appears in the costume of the Red Death and announces that he has written a new opera - "Triumphant Don Juan" - and "his" theater is obliged to deliver it. On the main female role, he again appoints Christina. After that, he hides himself through the secret hatch in the floor. Raoul jumps after him, but falls into a room full of mirrors, where he loses orientation. From there he is led by Madame Giri. She tells him the true story of the Ghost.

The unfortunate escaped, killing his tormentor, and Giri helped him escape into the catacombs under the Opera, where he grew up absorbing classical music, and soon showed himself the talent of an architect and artist, singer, composer. However, tormented by fate, he became cruel, jealous and purposeful. He somehow participated in the construction of the theater, since it is full of moves and places known only to him.

Christina goes to the cemetery at her father's grave to pray, but there she is already waiting for the Ghost. He again begins to suppress it with his voice. But at that moment Raul bursts into the cemetery, and enters into a duel with him. Christina begs to spare and let him go. The ghost is furious, he declares war on two lovers. The performance of "Triumphant Don Juan" is held at full notice. According to the scenario, Don Juan should appear to the masked lover. Right behind the scenes, the Ghost kills the actor who played Don Juan and takes his place. In fact, he wrote this aria for himself. No one except Christina will recognize in the Don Juan Ghost when he brilliantly performs his party, but when he concludes Christina in the arms at the end of the song, she tears off his mask, revealing a terrible, mutilated face.
