The Oxford Word Skills series is based on the oxford 3000tM, a list of lexical items based on frequency and usefulness to students. The books present new vocabulary in context then provide immediate practice. The reading texts in Britain for Learners of English provide all the information a student of Britain and British culture needs to know. The accompanying workbook provides extra tasks and activities. Holidays

Aim: 1. to provide students with information about traditional British holidays through a split reading activity 2. to present and practise holiday-related vocabulary. Holidays

1. L EAD - IN 1.Whats your earliest memory of going on holiday? 2.Do you usually take a holiday in your own country or abroad? Why? Is this true of most people in your country? 3.Have you planned your next holiday yet? If so, where are you going?

2. READING: Traditional seaside holidays 1.When did the British fashion for seaside holidays begin? 2.Who started this fashion? 3.When did the British working classes start having seaside holidays? 4.What kind of food is served in most British boarding houses? 5.Is swimming in the sea more popular with British children or adults? 6.What is a beach cabin for? 7.What is a pier, and what sort of things can you find on one? 8.What are Butlins and Pontins?

3. DISCUSSION: Holiday Activities Discuss whether or not these things from the Britain text are popular with people in our country: sitting / playing on the beach eating traditional food swimming in the sea or paddling going to the funfair staying in self-contained holiday villages (holiday camps)

8. HOMEWORK Write 250 words on the topic of holidays. Include this information: which places in our country are popular holiday destinations with local people and foreign visitors different kinds of holiday accommodation in our country holiday activities which are popular with young people in our country holiday activities which are popular with older people in our country your personal opinion on what makes a good holiday Use some of the new vocabulary from the lesson.
