«T HE L ONDON E YE » We welcome you to London. London is one of the largest cities in the world. About seven million people live here. London is more than two thousand years old.

T RAFALGAR S QUARE Trafalgar Square is the most famous of London squares. It is situated in the center of London not far from Westminster and Buckingham Palace. On the column in the center there is a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

T HE N ATIONAL G ALLERY The National Gallery has a fine collection of European paintings. It was begun in 1824 when 38 pictures were bought by the Government. Now there are more than 2000 paintings in the collection. There are no pictures by living artists.

P ICCADILLY C IRCUS Piccadilly Circus is a meeting point of six streets.

H IDE P ARK In the park anyone can stand up and say what they want. It is a very democratic park.

W ESTMINSTER A BBEY It is a royal church. Here you can see the tombs of many British kings and queens and other famous people and the beautiful Henry VII Chapel.

T HE T OWER OF L ONDON It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. It is a museum now. There are a lot of interesting collections in the Tower of London. The ravens are another famous sight. The legend says that without them the Tower will fall. The Raven Master is the person who gives them food.

T OWER B RIDGE It was built in It is next to the Tower of London. It is one of the famous bridges across the Thames. It opens and ships go up and down the River Thames.

S T.P AUL S C ATHEDRAL It is the greatest work of the architect Sir Christopher Wren.

C OVENT G ARDEN It was a big fruit and vegetable market. It is now a tourist shopping centre with cafes and restaurants and the Royal Opera House.
