Биография. Уильям Джералд Голдинг родился 19 сентября 1911 года в деревне Сент-Коламб Майнор. Отец писателя Алек Голдинг преподавал естественные науки и занимал пост заместителя директора в школе Мальборо, которую впоследствии закончил его сын. Мать писателя Милдред Голдинг была женщиной сильного характера и твёрдых убеждений, суфражистка и феминистка.

Она покоряет читателей своей драматической мощью, философской глубиной, буйством сложных поэтических метафор.
