How Do Teens Express Their Individuality? 1.Listening 2.Vocabulary Work 3.Questions for Discussions start

Listening Young people have a particular with the world. There are many groupings (subcultures) that have interests different from those of the mainstream culture. A particular cultural grouping is a way for young people to express their individuality. menu

Punk Punk, movement of disaffected youth of the late 1970s. A young person who dresses in a shocking way to express his or her identity (who somebody is). He or she has brightly coloured hair and wears metal chains. The person is thought to rebel (protest) against the society. They reject (say no to) everything. The music is aggressive. Punk music began in New York City and London and stressed aggressive and fast performance, after within a three-chord, three-minute format, as exemplified by British punk group the Sex Pistols and New York punk group the Ramones. menu

Ostensibly a rejection of everything that had gone before, punk rock drew on more than a decade of 1960s garage bands in the United States. Reggae and rockabilly were also important influences on, for example, the Clash, one of the most successful British punk bands. The punk movement also brought more women into rock and was generally antiracist imposed by its insistence on amateurism and by its provocation of outrage contributed to the decline of punk rock, but aspects live on in hardcore punk and grunge. menu

Skinhead They cut their hair shorter than others do. The majority of them are working class, patriotic, reggae and football fanatics, and very uninterested in politics. Most wear tight trousers and heavy boots (Doc Martens) and are usually regarded as violent and aggressive. menu

Rocker A young person who wears a leather jacket, army boots and just to show off. He is associated with something rebellious. They listen rock music. menu

Goth The members of this subculture wear the blackest black, with a lot of silver jewellery and have very black hair and look as thin and pale as possible. The members gather together to read Bram Stoker and talk about the end the world. menu

Biker A bike in Russia prefers a heavy bike like Harley Davidson and a leather jacket. But besides a real biker has his own values and beliefs as bikers of the USA have. Some people consider bikers aggressive. But in most cases they have only threatening appearance. All person who ride 2 or sometimes 3 wheeled motorized vehicles and who identity themselves with a particular (special) subculture. menu

Bike subculture appeared in Russian with the appearance of Moscow motor bike club `Night Wolves`. Officially was founded on May 31, But the core of it appeared in the early 80s. A Night Wolf No 1, nicknamed `The Surgeon` got his motorbike from his grandfather. The grandfather got it from the USA by lend-lease. The motorbike was produced in 1942, but it works well. The Surgeon (he is a real surgeon) together with his friends kept order at the concerts of underground musicians as `Hells Angels` did it. Working as guards is classical pastime of bikers. menu

The club is so famous not only in Russia but also all over the world that the first Russian Bike Show, which took place in 1995 attracted a lot of guests from abroad. Among them there were the representatives of subdivisions of `Hells Angels` in different countries. menu

Mod The youth fashions that developed in London during the 1960s owed more to Italian and American fashion innovations than they did to traditional English custom tailoring. Young man who identified themselves as mods word slim, streamlined jackets with tapered pants. In 1960s fashion designers such as Pierre Cardin began making menswear as well as womenswear. menu

Raver The club is so famous not only in Russia but also all over the world that the first Russian Bike Show, which took place in 1995 attracted a lot of guests from abroad. Among them there were the representatives of subdivisions of `Hells Angels` in different countries. menu

Hippie «Everything that brings people together is good; everything that draws them apart is evil. Love is the most powerful thing that brings people together.» The good old times for most of our hippies were the 1970s. Their ideals include love, peace, freedom of sell- expression, and nonconformity to societys rules. menu

Against the background of speeches, reports, slogans, which served as a smokescreen for corruption and moral crisis, hippies showed to young people an alternative to all that. Unfortunately, now the hippie community is becoming a place for really hopeless characters and those without any ideas and principles. It is not so difficult to look like a traditional hippie: a pair of worn-out blue jeans, long hair tied with bit of string and a couple of decorative chains. This is often used by drug sellers. They have noticed that if you are wearing your hair long and your jeans are old, you have a much easier time on the road. menu

Remarkably, while in society at large the drug problem is becoming more serious, within the hippie community it has stopped growing. Today hippies are more socially active. They set up environmental groups and join charity projects. Some classify these types of people like drug users and rock and roll fans, since their behaviours differ from social norms. They don t conform (dont keep) to societys standards and support a liberal attitude and lifestyle. They always want to change the world to the best. menu

Hacker Hacker, in computer science, originally, a computerphile – a person totally engrossed in computer programming and computer technology. In the 1980s, with the advent of personal computers and dial-up computer networks, hacker acquired a pejorative connotation, often referring to someone who secretively in invades others computers, inspecting or tampering with the programs or data stored on them. (More accurately, though, such a person would be called a cracker.) menu

Hacker also means someone who, beyond mere programming, likes to take apart operating systems to see what makes them tick. menu

Now the mods developed their own style distinct from others. A person has college-style hair, a neat white shirt, a short jacket, or a short blazer jacket, and narrow trousers. The clothes are Italian by choice. Pale face, plenty of make-up. Scooters (light motor cycles) are the preferred means of transportation. He or she prefers soul music. menu

True or false? Goth have black hair and look as thin and pale as possible. True FalseTrueFalse Skinhead is a person totally engrossed in computer programming and computer technology. True FalseTrue False Mods are slim, wear streamlined jackets with tapered pants. True FalseTrue False menu

Try again! Return

You are mistaking! Return

Well Done! Some classify hippie these types of people like drug users and rock and roll fans, since their behaviours differ from social norms. True FalseTrue False The majority of bikers are working class, patriotic, reggae and football fanatics, and very uninterested in politics. True FalseTrue False menu

Questions for Discussions. 1.How do these subcultures influence on teenagers? 2.Does a society need any subcultures to exist? 3.Can social life do without subcultures (give your reasons)?
