At the entrance of New York Harbor there s the colossal Statue of Liberty. It stands on Liberty Island near Ellis Island, the arrival point for European immigrants. Since 1886 the Statue of Liberty has symbolized America as a symbol of freedom for people all over the world. Its complete name is LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING THE WORLD. The statue was the work of French sculptor Frederic August e Bartholdi. He started his work in France and worked 10 years at it. Then the statue was taken to pieces and shipped across the Atlantic as a gift from France to the people of the United States of America. The Statue of Liberty is made of bronze. It is 93 metres high. It represents a woman holding a torch of fire in her right hand. The book that Liberty holds in her left hand symbolizes the Declaration of Independence. Sculptor Bartholdi combined elements of the Egyptian pyramids with his mothers face to create the statue. The Statue of Liberty was formally opened on the 28 th of October, 1886 in honor of the United States 100 th birthday. On the tablet within are inscribed the last five lines of a sonnet The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus, a daughter of Jewish immigrants from Russia:

Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
