The Hard Sign Ъ The hard sign indicates that the preceding consonant is hard. Like the soft sign, the hard sign has no independent pronunciational value. It must be paired with a consonant.

Comparison Ь The soft sign indicates that the preceding consonant is soft. Ъ The hard sign indicates that the preceding consonant is hard.

Note on Pronunciation Pronounce ж with the tip of your tongue slightly curled back and pointing to the top of your mouth. This sound is always hard. Pronounce Х with your tongue in the same position in which you pronounce г and к. Pronounce щ as a long shh sound, as in fresh sheets, with the tip of your tongue close to your lower front teeth.

Где? To answer the question ГДЕ? (Where?) replace the -а at the end of a noun with -е. Example: Где То́ня? В шко́ле. If there is a consonant at the end of the word, just add -e. Example: Где па́па?
