How You Can Help Your Children Read to them and let them read to you or to siblings or anyone who will listen. Ask questions about what your child has been reading (they are tested on how quickly and accurately they can read and what they comprehend).

Have your child open the book to a page in the middle of the book. As your child reads, he/she must put up a finger every time he/she gets to a word not known automatically. The book is appropriate if there are 5 or less fingers up. five finger test Check out books regularly from the library (make sure it is on their instructional level – give the five finger test)

For younger students or students still struggling with letter recognition, ask for a copy of the sound spelling cards and go over the sounds with them daily.

Help them practice reading fluency with a timer. Let them go online to the HM site and play the games, etc. If you dont have the Internet at home, you can go to the library or our schools Parent Center and sign up to use a computer with the Internet access for free. Practice writing sentences at home (sentence formation and handwriting practice).
