Julia Rajk Júlia Rajk was born as Júlia Földes in 1914 in a lower working class family with strong communist tradition. Between 1945 and 1949 as a wife of the famous communist minister of interior, Lászlóné Rajk (Mrs. László Rajk) she was one of the leaders of the mass communist womens organization. In 1949 after the execution of her husband she was sentenced for five years of imprisonment for supporting her husbands so called subversive policy. After she spent her sentence and she was released from prison as Lászlóné Györk (Mrs László Györk). Her name, and also her sons name were changed without any consultation to doom the name of her husband into oblivion. Her appeals for official rehabilitation to the leaders of the communist party were signed by both names Rajk and Györk. She used her unquestionable and uncontested moral power as a widow of the innocently executed hero of the Hungarian communist movement, to force the communist party leadership starting and completing the rehabilitation of political prisoners, and her husband was buried with all possible official honour on 6 October The photo of the widow and her son taken at the funeral became world famous as symbols of victims of Stalinism. His son was three-month old baby when his father was imprisoned. The baby was taken to an orphanage and his name was also changed to István Kovács, the most common name in Hungarian. After the reburial she was regained her name as Lászlóné Rajk and the son as László Rajk jr.

Julia Rajk On 4th November, 1956 when the Soviet Army occupied Hungary she asked for a political refugee right at the Embassy of Jugoslavia together with Imre Nagy, the Prime Minister of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and the members of his cabinet. Ms. Rajk was also kidnapped to Romania by the Soviets together with Imre Nagy and she spent there two years till she was given the permit to return to Hungary as Julia Rajk. After 1958 she became THE Júlia, a real institution who always protected the weak against those who were abusing their power, she was negotiating with the party leadership to protect the anti-communist intellectuals. She organized the first NGO in Hungary after the ban on associations in 1951: a dog shelter, she also organized signatures for supporting the Charta 77 and campaigned against strengthening the abortion law. She offered the compensation she received for the loss of her husband for a fund supporting talented university students when individual charity was not an accepted value, etc. Júlia Rajk would have disliked being named as a feminist because for her it would have meant a liberal middle-class woman following the judgement of the communist movement. When the first proto-feminist movement was organized against the strengthening abortion laws in 1975, she was the first to sign the petition on the first place, giving security with her name to the first dissent action organized in Hungary after I would name her the most successful Hungarian feminist so far if we take into consideration her influence and impact of her actions which were protected with her name and executed in her presence.
