Christmas Christmas It is the most popular holiday. It is celebrated on the 25 th of December. People send Christmas cards

decorate a Christmas tree and put presents under it

have Christmas dinner which consists of roast turkey, vegetables and Christmas pudding.

Boxing Day It is on the 26 th of December. It was started in the UK about 800 years ago. People open Christmas boxes with presents, visit friends, go for а long walk on this day.

In big cities and towns Pantomime is a traditional British Christmas play and a chance for people to go to the theatre which starts on Boxing Day.

Good Friday It is the day before Easter Sunday and is remembered as the day Christ was crucified. On Good Friday people eat hot cross buns-fruit buns decorated with a simple cross.

EASTER Easter is a holiday in late March or early April. Many people go to church on Easter Sunday.

Some people send Easter cards with religious symbols or pictures of small chickens, lambs, rabbits and spring flowers associated with Easter.

Children look forward to Easter Sunday because they are given chocolate Easter eggs. They are also popular with adults and millions are sold in the weeks before Easter.

Easter Monday Easter Monday is the day after Easter Day. It is time for the traditional event such as egg- rolling.

London s Easter Parade takes place on this day.

Spring Bank Holiday Coopers Hill in Brockwort Gloucestershire. It is on the last Monday in May or on the first Monday in June. There are some customs on this day. One of them is Coopers Hill Cheese Rolling.

The first person to cross the line wins a Double Gloucester cheese that weighs 8lbs(3.5 kg)

Summer Bank Holiday It is on the last Monday in August or on the first Monday in September. It was first observed in People take trips or short vacations, work in their gardens, take part in different activities.

In London the Notting Hill Carnival is held on this holiday. It attracts over two million people.

The New Year It is not as widely and enthusiastically observed as Christmas. The type of celebration varies very much according to the local customs, family traditions and personal taste.

Hogmanay is a Scottish name for New Years Eve. There is a procession of townsfolk in fancy dress carrying large torches. When the procession completes its tour the torches are thrown into a pile and everyone dances around the blaze until the torches burn out.

Up Helly Aa It takes place on the last Tuesday in January. It is a Viking fire festival celebrated more than 130 years in Scotland.

Its one of the most spectacular festivals in Europe. Each year a replica of a Viking galley is built for Up Helly Aa.

This festival includes the burning of a Viking galley and a torchlight parade.

Nearly 1000 people dressed as Vikings or in other fancy dress take part in this event.

ST. VALENTINES DAY ST. VALENTINES DAY It is celebrated on the 14 th of February.

People give presents such as flowers or chocolate to each other,

send greeting cards called Valentines which have designs of hearts, angels, gold arrows, roses, cupids.

Crufts Dog Show Crufts Dog Show It is the largest annual dog show in the world. It is hold at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham and lasts four days in March. The main award is «The Best in Show».

St. Davids Day St. Davids Day On the 1 st of March Welsh people celebrate St. Davids Day.

The Boat Race The Boat Race It is a rowing race in England between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club on the last Saturday of March.

St. Patricks Day It is hold on the 17 th of March. It is celebrated by Irish people.

Pancake Day It varies from year to year and falls between the 3 rd of February and the 9 th of March. People eat pancakes on this day.

Women take part in Pancake races.

Mothers Day It is usually in March. People visit their mothers and give them flowers and gifts or send cards.

Fools Day On Fools Day people play harmless jokes on family members and friends. The victim of these jokes is called an April fool.

St. George Day It is on the 23 rd of April. It is England's national day for a red rose in the buttonhole.

May Day It is a pagan spring festival. The May Queen is chosen and crowned with a garland of flowers. In m а n у villages Maypole is erected around which the children dance.

Rochester Sweeps Festival It is on the 1 st of May. It is a colorful mix of music, dancing and entertainment.

Chelsea Flower Festival It is a garden show held each year for five days in May by the Royal Horticultural Society in the park of Chelsea Royal Hospital in London.

Trooping the Colour The official Queens birthday is celebrated by this ceremony on the second Saturday in June. It takes place on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall.

Midsummers Day It is on the 24 th of June. Druids meet the sunrise at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. It is a very old custom.

Halloween It is on the 31 st of October. Its popular traditions are: -dressing fancy costume -leaving food for ghosts outside -making the Jack- o-lantern -trick or treat

Guy Fawkes Night It commemorates the discovery of the so-called Gunpowder Plot. It is widely celebrated throughout the country on the 5 th of November by bonfire parties, fireworks, burning a guy.

St. Andrews Day It is on the 30 th of November. It is Scotland's official national day. Many Midwinter customs and folk superstitions are connected to St. Andrew's day.
