The Nations Capital

In 1800, Washington was established as the Capital of the United States of America. A small governing body moved from Philadelphia to Washington to carefully plan the young republics new capital. Starting from a frontier-like town, it has gradually become to the metropolitan community we know today.

The Capitol Building, whose cornerstone was laid in 1793 by then President George Washington, is the symbol of American government.

Completed in 1865 by Constantino Brumidi, the Frescoe covers the 4, 664 square feet inside the dome of the Capitol Building. Deemed as one of the most stately buildings in the world, it is constructed of Massachusetts marble and Virginia sandstone, with a cast iron dome to complete the building.

Was originally designed by James Hoban. Construction began in 1792 and was completed in 1800.

The president meets members from the Office of Homeland Security and other White House staff in the Oval Office. The State Dining Room is currently used for formal dining.
