MSC.Patran 2005 R2 LBC Memory Improvement February, 2005

S9-2 For large models, Patran uses large amounts of memory during the creation of LBC graphical display data This can result in either no LBC display or even the inability to create an LBC A significant reduction was made in memory in Patran 2005 However, the memory requirements are still based on model size LBC Memory Improvement

S9-3 In prior release, LBC graphical display data generation code operates on one or more LBCs at a time Memory requirements are directly proportional to the LBC application region size In 2005 R2, the same code will process on entity basis Common to have application region with elements or nodes, but less likely to have over 1000 LBC sets Memory requirements can be reduced significantly depending on the model Foundation for more significant improvements in future releases LBC Memory Improvement

S9-4 LBC Memory Improvement

MSC.Patran 2005 R2 Double Precision Group Transform January, 2005

S9-6 This enhancement extends the double precision support added in MSC.Patran 2005 to additionally support double precision transformations of the entity types that were converted at that time Coordinate systems Nodes MPCs Group Transform

S9-7 The scope includes group transform and the individual transform methods, but is limited to the entity types listed earlier (coordinate frames, nodes, and MPCs) From a user interface point of view, nothing will change due to this enhancement All the user will see is improved accuracy for coordinate frames, nodes, and MPCs following transformations on them or groups containing them Group Transform

S9-8 While the data being transformed is double precision, the inputs (transform specification) shall still remain single precision PCL and the list processor do not support double precision The single precision data is carefully converted to double precision, assuring that only six significant digits are carried over Single precision "garbage" is omitted Group Transform

S9-9 User Scenario The sample Nastran input file contains double precision GRID coordinates (16 digits). GRID* * 43 GRID* * 44 GRID* * 45 GRID* * 46 GRID* * 47 GRID* * 48 GRID* * 49 GRID* * 50 GRID* * 51 GRID* * 52.

S9-10 User Scenario Using Group:Transform to move the model 1000 units. GRID* * 0. GRID* * 100. GRID* * 200. GRID* * 300. GRID* * 400. GRID* * 500. GRID* * 600. GRID* * Be sure to use Write Stored Precision option when creating the new Nastran input file

MSC.Patran 2005 R2 Field Spreadsheet Enhancement January, 2005

S9-12 Users find the row and column labeling of 2 and 3D spreadsheets confusing in the previous releases of Patran The number does not indicate which variable it applies to In 2005 R2, variable is added to the label Field Spreadsheet

S9-13 Field Spreadsheet

S9-14 Auto highlighting (in the input data box) was added in v2005 but had 2 limitations It was not added to all spreadsheets Defaulted to highlighting OFF In 2005 R2, toggle is added to all spreadsheets settings.pcl preference is now available to control the default pref_env_set_logical( "fields_spreadsheet_auto_highlight", true ) Field Spreadsheet

S9-15 Import/Export of CSV files was added in v2005 It was not added to all spreadsheets In 2005 R2, toggle is added to all spreadsheets Field Spreadsheet

S9-16 settings.pcl preference is now available to control multi-cell selection value in the input data box In the previous releases The value in that cell is placed in the input data databox when single cells are selected The databox is set to blank when multiple cells are selected In 2005 R2, the databox can be set to the upper left cell selected with the following settings.pcl entry pref_env_set_logical( "fields_spreadsheet_multicell", true ) Field Spreadsheet

S9-17 The ability to UNDO spreadsheet edit operations has been added multi-level undo is now available on all fields spreadsheets Except fem, complex and space time Field Spreadsheet

S9-18 Field Spreadsheet

MSC.Patran 2005 R2 Magnitude Option for Transform Operations January, 2005

S9-20 Transform – Translate menus have been redesigned to provide added flexibility in defining translation direction and magnitude Geometry : Transform : Translate Elements : Transform : Node : Translate Group : Transform : Translate Magnitude Option

S9-21 Two components of the Translation Vector are now available Direction vector Vector magnitude In the previous releases, the same translation vector controls both direction and magnitude Magnitude Option

S9-22 Geometry Operations

S9-23 FEM Operations

S9-24 Group Transform Operations

S9-25 Added flexibility in model manipulation Define the translation vector by defining the direction vector and magnitude separately Example: Use two existing points/grids to define general transform direction, but specify magnitude separately Example: Reverse transform direction even with a 2 Point Vector method Magnitude Option

S9-26 User Interface Translation Vector has two separate inputs Direction Vector Vector Magnitude Two additional translation options are now available Reverse Direction Auto Update Magnitude If ON, the vector magnitude databox will automatically be updated with the magnitude of the translation vector If OFF, the user will input the vector magnitude manually. Magnitude Option

MSC.Patran 2005 R2 Ease of Use Initiative Reverse Black and White Icon February, 2005

S9-28 Reverse Black & White icon Ease of Use Initiative

S9-29 An option has been added to allow the interactive changing of the black and white colors in the viewports An icon on the top menu is now available One of the current icons has been removed/consolidated to ensure there is enough space to include the icon Ease of Use Initiative

S9-30 Import Attributes Previous releases The new Reverse Black & White icon Show Labels & Hide Labels icons have been consolidated into one Cycle Show Labels icon

MSC.Patran 2005 R2 Timeout Enhancement January, 2005

S9-32 Timeout Improvement As a part of our ongoing quality initiative, we have modified how Patran handles the TIMEOUT/inactive session. In the event where Patran has released licenses due to inactivity and other applications have taken the necessary licenses, Patran, when re-activated, will now display a modal form asking the user to acknowledge here are no licenses and it displays a modal form asking the user to acknowledge, then it exits. Hopefully, this change will significantly minimize the "perceived" crashes. If you wish, you can test this in our latest 2005 R2 mod (v13-072).

MSC.Patran 2005 r2 Tool Menu April, 2005

S9-34 The TOOL menu has been categorized into 4 sections Applications Pre-processing Post-processing Pre-release Integrated random solution has been added as a licensed option Tool Menu

S9-35 Some pre-processing functionalities are preference dependent, and will be ghosted out accordingly Tool Menu All preference Abaqus preference only Nastran preference only Marc preference only
