Printing Technologies Direct Thermal Thermal Transfer

Thermal Transfer - a ribbon is used. As the ribbon passes between the heated print head and the media, the heat of the print head causes the ribbon to release ink, which bonds to the surface of the media. Direct Thermal - no ribbon is used. The print head comes into direct contact with specially treated, heat sensitive material. As the print head elements are heated, the stock turns black, and the print becomes part of the label or tag. Printing Technologies

Direct Thermal Advantages –Only One Supply Item –Simple Printer Operation –Quality Images –Cost Efficient Disadvantages –Sensitive to Environment –Limited Materials –Shorter Printhead Life –Higher Darkness Setting

Direct Thermal Lifespan Important Factors: Direct thermal materials image by reacting to heat from the print head They also react to other heat sources and light Images fade and paper discolours (see samples) Image durability depends on storage after printing/ location of labelled item

Archive Life Archive lifespan –This refers to the lifespan of the printed image under very specific storage conditions, away from heat and light, away from plastic and plasticizers –Lifespan of image depends on condition of product once archived e.g. if already faded, lifespan will be reduced 5 YEARS - Z-Perform 100D (60 & 80 Micron) Receipt - Labels (non-tampered) 10 YEARS D Receipt

Pre-printing Inks Direct thermal labels are in direct contact with the print head Special inks required to avoid issues with burning of ink onto print heads which cause print failure and premature print head wear Zebra has tested and approved special inks and has systems to ensure the correct combination is used Sell with confidence against less knowledgeable competitors!

Thermal Transfer Advantages –Durable Image for Indoor/Outdoor Conditions –Variety of Labels and Ribbon Formulations –Better for fine/small print –Longer printhead life Disadvantages –Two Supply Items –Ribbon Must be Compatible with face stock –Higher Total Cost

How important are the supplies for our Business? What makes the most money?

Remember No one material is perfect for every application, so…. TEST, TEST, TEST! Try several samples together This is important if qualification/ testing time is longer e.g. 3 months New materials- sometimes only A4 sheets are available

Materials Samples Labels: - for all materials we hold a stock of sample rolls on 3 cores (not for Desktop or Mobile) Ribbons: - for all qualities we hold sample rolls on stock (again not for Desktop or Mobile)

Ribbons

The Construction of a Ribbon PrimerInk LayerBase Film Back Coating

Ribbon Types Ribbons are usually classed as one of three types: –Wax –Wax/Resin –Resin Resin Ribbon features: – More resistant than wax to environmental conditions – Burns at higher temperatures and require slower print speeds

Used on both uncoated and coated papers and tags Best for: short-life or price-sensitive applications, or ones with little exposure to heat or abrasion Application Examples: – Shipping Labels – Box Labels (e.g. fast-moving consumer goods) – Retail Pricing – Simple work-in-process (manufacturing) – Inventory Tracking Wax Ribbons

Used on coated papers and tags, and may be used on many matt (not glossy) synthetic materials Sharper images are achieved on coated papers than with wax ribbons Best with medium-life applications, or those with exposure to abrasion and/or excessive handling Application Examples: – Pallet labelling – Box labels (e.g. higher-value capital goods) – Shelf-edge labelling – Pharmaceutical – Demanding work-in-progress Wax/Resin Ribbons

Wax or Wax/Resin? Wax ribbons – typically 1-2% resin Wax/Resin – typically 12-20% resin Resin-enhanced wax or hard wax ribbons are around 5-8% resin BEWARE LOW COST WAX/RESINS!! Some manufacturers are now offering low-cost wax/resins that are actually hard wax products Remember Zebra 2100!

Resin Ribbons Used on glossy or matt synthetics in demanding applications Best with long-life applications, and/or those that require resistance to heat, heavy abrasion and/or chemicals Application Examples: – Electronic component labelling – Serialised rating plates – Outdoor asset tracking – Automotive applications – Chemical Drums

3400 Zebras Ribbon Range for Industrial Printers Durability 5049 | 5319 RESINWAX/RESINWAX 2100 PRICE LOW HIGH DURABILITY ZPL Mid-range/High-end printers 3200

2300 Standard Wax Price-fighting wax, excellent print quality on a wide range of papers, including uncoated Easily beats competing low-cost wax ribbons on quality OUR BEST SELLING RIBBON!

2100 High-performance Wax A unique ribbon Think of it as a low cost wax/resin Can be used on papers AND matt synthetics in certain applications e.g. synthetic box/pallet labels Superior scratch resistance to all other wax ribbons in the market Excellent versatility and superb small font printability Lowest burn temperatures Ideal for pallet labelling or box labelling in more demanding environments Top Performer

3400 Performance Wax/Resin The right price/quality combination Excellent versatility on a wide range of coated papers and matt synthetics In summary, a very impressive all rounder Much more competitively priced than previous mid- range wax/resin ribbons from Zebra This product has given Zebra good market share in the mid-range wax/resin market

3200 Premium Wax/Resin The best wax/resin on the market Fast print speeds Superior scratch and chemical resistance to all other wax/resin ribbons in the market Almost a resin - can be used in some more demanding applications instead of resin ribbons e.g. glossy synthetic shelf-edge labels Extremely versatile = it will print on almost anything Best choice when one ribbon fits all required The 3200 ribbon shows no wear when tested against another leading wax/resin ribbon after crockmeter (durability) testing Top Performer

4800 Performance Resin Competitively-priced resin ribbon Prints on a wide range of glossy synthetics and many matt synthetics Excellent scratch resistance Good chemical resistance Close to 5095, and will suit approximately 70-80% of relevant applications

5095 High-Performance Resin Superior to 4800 for very small text and barcodes More versatile = prints on an even wider range of synthetic label materials Improved chemical resistance Specified as a leading ribbon throughout many industries e.g electronic component manufacturers Many companies already have it UL approved with label stocks Top Performer

5100 Premium Resin The best chemical resistance Use only if 4800 and 5095 fail on chemical resistance (because it is expensive) Needs higher burn temperatures than 4800 and 5095 One customer uses 5100 resin because it was the only ribbon they could find to pass their rub tests for 19 different chemicals!!

5319 Performance Wax The perfect wax for desktop printers Will print on all types of paper labels and tags Your Zebra desktop printer will perform at its BEST when 5319 wax is used And, like all our ribbons, it is available to order in small volumes, from stock – minimum order of just 12 rolls!

100% Label Quality Quality Parts/Printheads Printer Label Material Ribbon Zebras Total Quality Circle Offering security to resellers and end-users Sourcing individual elements from different suppliers could break the Total Quality Circle, and put label quality at risk. Zebra has a solution that encompasses all elements, therefore keeping the Circle intact, ensuring label quality.

The Zebra Solution Ribbon suppliers are very rarely label experts And label suppliers are not ribbon experts The two markets (label and ribbon) do not operate together Zebra understands the best Zebra label and ribbon COMBINATIONS Zebra brings labels and ribbons together
