EMEA Techshare 2009 The Future Begins 44 How SAS works? SAS as Redundant Proxy In Normal Mode the 96xx SIP phones register and work directly with the SIP Enablement Server (SES) – They have advanced SIP telephony features in this mode. In Normal Mode SAS ignores any registration request from SIP Phones. – It monitors the availability of SES using OPTIONS method – Monitors availability of the proxies, taking action to preserve service when network or equipment conditions affect availability. – Selects the highest-priority available proxy. – Automatically determines and adapts to the capabilities supported by the available call controller reachable through the active proxy. In case of Emergency (when the SIP Enablement Server (SES) is not responding), SAS starts accepting registration request from the SIP phones. 96xx SIP phones will register to SAS as soon as they find that they cant reach SES. – They have basic SIP features in this mode

If a customer does not have Cisco in the Core of their network, they will have to invest a significant amount of $, time and risk to change to Cisco. LOW CAPEX. Lower cost. An 8 port (4-FXS, 4FXO) gateway (MP-118) costs $822. HIGH CAPEX. $3400 to voice enable a 2811 router. HIGHER VOICE AVAILABILITY. No Single point of failure. Voice runs on a separate gateway. ISR is single point of failure. Any router upgrade/issue means no voice for that branch LOW OPEX. Easy to configure and manage. Centralized management of these gateways HIGH OPEX. Difficult to configure. CLI based. Limited centralized management capabilities
