About the book Genre Romance novel Was written in 1999 Nicholas Sparks begins his new book, A WALK TO REMEMBER, by promising that "first you will smile, and then you will cry - don't say that you haven't been warned."
About the Book Plot This book is set in the start of the 50s, the time at which the world was sweeter, when women wore dresses and men wore hats… A time when something happened to a 17-year old boy that would change his life forever.
It was 1958, and Landon Carter, a popular boy at his high school in Beaufort, North Carolina, had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love.
Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister. A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens.
She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same.
Jamie then asked Landon to play in the schools Christmas play. Both Landon and Jamie star in this play that Jamie's father has written. The play details the personal story of his life after his wife's death and his search for love and the meaning of life within his daughter. Jamie plays the angel and Landon, the lead male role.
With each passing day he spent with Jamie, in rehearsals and occasional talks together on her front porch, Landon starts to like her. As a result, he becomes a better person, helping her do good deeds and accompanying her to the orphanage.
The opening night of the play, he is amazed when he first sees her walk on the stage dressed as an angel, with her hair loose and flowing down her back. She glitters onstage and he falls for her true beauty.
With following twists and turns Landon and Jamie fall in love. But Landon feels that something has been left out, that Jamie has a secret.
After many dates, Landon finally learns that Jamie had terminal leukemia, has stopped responding to treatment and is dying. Landon understands everything: why she'd wanted him to do the play; why her father looked so tired all the time, why she wanted Christmas at the orphanage to be so special, why she didn't think she'd go to college, why she'd given him her Bible, why she said not to fall in love with her…
Since then Landon tries to do everything possible to help her, to make each day special… He takes her to one of the most beautiful places of the town, he reads the Bible together with her and tries to understand each part of it… But something tells him that this is not enough.
Reading the Bible gave them something to focus on…While they read the Bible, people would knock at the door at least three times every day. People were always dropping by, some with food, others just to say hello. You've got the biggest heart of anyone we've ever met," – they said.
Soon Landon understood what a special thing he should do…He decided to marry Jamie…They were married by Hegbert (Jamies father) in the Baptist church…
Jamie was more than just the woman Landon loved. With her steady hand she showed him how important it was to help others; with her patience and kindness she showed him what life is really all about. Her cheerfulness and optimism, even in times of sickness, was the most amazing thing he have ever witnessed. Landon learned miracles can happen. Jamie dies and in the end of the book Landon is still very much in love with her.

The film a walk to remember Comparisons to novel Nicholas Sparks and the producer decided to update the setting from the 1950s to the 1990s, worrying that a movie set in the 50s would fail to draw teens. To make the update believable, Landon's pranks and behavior are worse than they are in the novel. Sparks and the producer also changed the play in which Landon and Jamie appear.
