HISTORY Founded by the French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534, Canada has its origins from the French colony at the site of modern Quebec City, originally inhabited by local peoples. The Canadian confederation was born from the union of three British colonies- Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada (the Province of Canada later was divided into Ontario and Quebec), which were before the territories of New France, after a period of English colonization. Canada got its independence from the United Kingdom in the result of the peace process from 1867 to 1982.
