Company Confidential 2 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Outline Concept and motivation of hybrid BTS backhaul Implementation via ATM Pseudowires and feature set Schedule (trial systems and commercial implementation) Future enhancements
Company Confidential 3 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Basic concept and motivation of hybrid BTS backhaul Note 2: Hybrid backhaul is the first step towards packet-only transport and/or Iub/IP. Hybrid = two parallel traffic paths between BTS and RNC - one via classical TDM/ATM - one via a packet-switched network (PSN) Motivation: increased capacity need due to HSPA; operators revenue not increasing in the same way take advantage of cost efficient PSN services. Note 1: Route or Path Selection are mandatory precondition for hybrid backhaul.
Company Confidential 4 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Hybrid backhaul: typical traffic split TDM/ATM traffic path: for delay critical traffic (DCH) for reliability critical traffic (DCN) PSN traffic path: for non-delay critical traffic (HSPA) for less reliability critical traffic

Company Confidential 9 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Full PW option If PSN characteristics are suitable (delay, jitter, availability), then all traffic (including delay-critical DCH traffic) can be transported over PWs. A separate synchronisation solution is needed for the BTS (GPS, …).

Company Confidential 11 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Feature set of IFUH and FTIA in WBTS 4.0 PDH interfaces: FTIA: 4 x E1/T1/JT1 interfaces (symmetrical). AXC IFUH: separate PDH interface unit. ATM over PDH with IMA. Ethernet interfaces (only one of them active). 2 x Fast Ethernet (electrical). 1 x optional Gigabit Ethernet (optical) via SFP module. PW protocol stack: PWs are identified by MPLS labels. PSN tunnels are established by IP addresses IP connectivity between BTS and RNC (suitable for Ethernet, MPLS and IP networks). PW throughput corresponds to 16 x E1. PW OAM function (VCCV-BFD) for connectivity verification (to overcome lack of OAM functions in PSNs). Licensed feature for FTIA (w/o license, only PDH interfaces can be used).
Company Confidential 12 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Schedule Hybrid BTS Backhaul shall be supported in WBTS 4.0 / RAS06 IFUH (AXC) for RAS06. FTIA (FTM): HW already delivered in RAN05.1. SW and feature available with RAS06. Trials with TMO starting July 2006 Trials using Pseudowire Gateways (PW GWs) at the Node B site. Vendor selection process showed RAD being the most suitable vendor for GWs. Affected EFS: none (feature implementation is limited to transport specification on SFS transport level and AXC/FTM).
Company Confidential 13 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Future enhancements / new features Future enhancements and new features: Timing-over-Packet (ToP) ToP server at RNC site. ToP slaves in BTSs. MPLS-based encapsulation Lower overhead compared to IP encapsulation. Particular suitability for MPLS networks. Ethernet switching For other than mobile traffic at the same site Support for non-tail site topologies (together with ATM XC); however, clear trend to tail site.
Company Confidential 14 © 2005 Nokia Hybrid_Backhaul_feature_training.ppt / / GBe Summary ATM over PSN as network feature (BTS-RNC end-to-end). Targeting Ethernet and IP network services. Support of Hybrid and Full PW solutions. Integrated PW gateway in BTS in WBTS 4.0 (implementation in Ultrasite (AXC) and Flexi WCDMA BTS (FTM) with common feature set). Licensed feature (FTM). Future enhancements (ToP, MPLS encapsulation, Ethernet switching).
