History of St Valentines Day Saint Valentine's Day( Valentine's Day) is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it remains a working day in most of them. Valentine's Day - the popular festival of love and romances traces its origin to ancient Roman festival and has not been created by card companies as some people believe it to be. There are various legends associated with the festival along with the belief that birds began to mate from this day. Popularity of the Valentine's Day festival stems from the combined effects of all these legends, beliefs and of course the wish to glorify the unparalleled feeling of love.
The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. There are various popular and interesting legends of St Valentine's Day. Some legends trace the origin of Valentine's Day to pagan times while others link it one or more Saints of early Christian Church. Yet another point of view on the origin of Valentine's Day links it to the beginning of birds mating season. Popularity of the festival is perhaps due to the combined effect of all these legends along with the notion that spring is the time for love. Some famous legends of Valentine's day are: Feast of Lupercalia Saint Valentine of Rome - I Saint Valentine of Rome - II Birds Mating Time
Valentines Day and Christian church But there is a version that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentines day in the middle of February in an effort to christianize celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big jar. The citys bachelors would then each choose a name out of the jar and would then be a partner of chosen woman for the duration of the festival. Sometimes the pairing of the people lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentines Day around 498 A.D. The Roman lottery system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed.
Valentines Day in centuries Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending simple gifts such as flowers. In Great Britain, Valentines Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.
