The Provost of King's College Cambridge ( ), Biological Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society ( ). Main interests: development of behaviour, imprinting, processes that translate genetic and environmental influences into behavioural outcomes. The subject of spontaneously expressed adaptive behaviour is important but has led to great controversies. Over the years, the concepts of instinct and innateness have acquired a great many different meanings. Evidence for one meaning does not necessarily imply evidence for another. In my lecture I shall explore how growing understanding of development makes it possible to bring light to a subject that has generated much heat.
