1 BASIC RULES FOR FORMING IMPERATIVES You must know the 3 rd Person Plural and 1 st Person Singular forms, including stresses! Remove the ending from the 3 rd Person Plural (ут/ют for I Conj, ат/ят for II, and remove -ся)

2 Remove the ending from the 3 rd Person Plural читa начн вед ответ познаком -ют -ут -ят -ятся

3 If the stem ends in a vowel, add й: Чита + й Читай! Закро + й Закрой!

4 If the stem ends in two consonants, add и: Начн + и Начни! Смотр + и Смотри!

5 If the stem ends in one consonant and the 1 st Singular is stressed on the ending, add и: вед у веди! крич у кричи!

6 If the stem ends in one consonant and the 1 st Singular is stressed on the stem, add ь: отв е чу ответь! б у ду будь!

7 Or in symbolic notation: V + й CC + и C ´ + и ´ C + ь

8 Add -те to all for plural/polite imperatives: Читайте! Закройте! Смотрите! Ответьте!

9 Dont forget to put сь/ся back on where necessary! Познакомьтесь! Проснитесь! (dont forget that й is a consonant: Улыбайся!)

10 Some exceptions (of course): verbs with -авай do not mutate to -ай: Вставать – встаю – встают But: Вставай! Давать -- даю -- дают But: Давай!

11 A few more irregular verbs: Дать – дай! Есть – ешь! Пить – пей! Ехать/поехать – поезжай! Лечь – ляг! (no soft sign after г)

14 BASIC RULES FOR USING Positive IMPERATIVES Positive commands normally use perfectives: Закройте дверь! but imperfectives are used for polite invitations: Входите, пожалуйста! and for general rules/repeated actions: Читайте учебник каждый день!

15 BASIC RULES FOR USING Negative IMPERATIVES Negative commands normally use imperfectives: Никому не говори об этом! but perfectives are used for warnings/things that might happen by accident: Не забудь, что у нас завтра контрольная! Не опоздай!

16 3rd Person IMPERATIVES (Let him/her/them do it!) Пусть/пускай + 3rd person conjugated form: Пусть он это напишет! Пусть сдают контрольную еще раз! Пусть Катя приготовит обед сегодня!
