One common language - myth or reality Shishkina V. Okhapkina Y. Gnutova S.
We tried to find out: whether there was one common language in ancient times ; why people speak so many languages nowadays; whether it is possible to create a new language and make it popular.
Some glimpses of history The legend says that once upon a time people of Babel decided to build a tower to reach the sky. The construction of that tower lasted for 42 years and the tower rose 27 miles high. But God became angry that somebody dared to disturb him. He sent angels and they divided people into some groups. People couldnt understand each other anymore because they spoke different languages. That's why they gave up the construction of the tower. What is more some scientists believe that common language in ancient times is not only a legend.
They found out that many modern languages grew out of the same language. They called it Indo- European. This theory explains why modern languages have much in common. Scientists also say that when people moved somewhere one language got different traits in different places. The more years passed the greater were the differences. That's why weve got so many languages nowadays.
To be or not to be When people didnt understand each other they tried to express their ideas with the help of things, pictures, gestures, flowers, etc. But sometimes they were understood incorrectly. People created a lot of new languages for special occasions. We still use notes, mathematical symbols, gestures. In order to understand and to become closer to each other people created about 2000 artificial languages. Only about 10 of them were really popular. And still there is misunderstandings…
Will we have one common language? Nobody knows. But here are some very important facts. It seems that some widely spread languages look like international. But they are rather difficult for studying. Besides if one of existing national languages dominates in the world, it may cause a number of conflicts. Latin was proposed as a neutral common language. But it is more difficult than present day languages. And some notions of nowadays haven t got equivalents in Latin.
As for the artificial languages, only one language is constantly used by 20 million people. 150 newspapers and magazines are published in it. 10 broadcasting stations use Esperanto. It is quite popular in Internet. One can find literature of different kinds in Esperanto. Many songs, films, shows are created in it. It s vocabulary consists of many international words. There are only 16 grammar rules without exceptions in Esperanto. As it is neutral and close to a great variety of national languages, it has a real possibility to become a common one. Maybe it has more chances than national languages.
