5 THE BASIC PART The level of this bad habit among teenagers in Russia in 2009 was almost 50% for boys and 37.5% for girls. 1. Active and passive smokers

8 2. Smoking and youth Nowadays the problem of teen ­ age smoking has become a pre ­ vailing"' 5 one. A quarter of Rus ­ sian boys try their first cigarette "before they are 10. About 28% of girls start smoking at the age of teenager between the ages of smokes systematically now. According to the WHO, in Great Britain the average age to start smoking for boys is 9.7, and for girls In the USA -12 years for both. Most smoking youth (43%) say that the first time they tried a cigarette was motivated by a simple desire to try it. The direct influ ­ ence of other teenagers was cit ­ ed by 9%, and 20% say that their decision to smoke was their friends were smoking and they wanted to keep them company.

9 3. Smoking leads to death It is proven that a package of cigarettes deprives a person of 400 minutes or 6 hours, 40 min ­ utes of life. It means that an ordi ­ nary smoker looses min ­ utes or 32 days a year, having only eleven months instead of twelve left.

10 4. Smoking and cancer Cigarette smoking is believed by most research workers to be an important factor in the development of cancer of the lungs and throat and is believed to be related to cancer of the bladder and the oral cavity.
