Arising from previous sinful activity Sinful acts produce a variety of modifications of the five klesas Arising from previous pious activity Addictions to the results of pious action such as sattva guna sense enjoyment and mukti
Anartha arising from aparadha Aparadha here refers to Nama Aparadha Unconscious aparadha is removed by constant chanting. Conscious aparadha is removed with great difficulty
Sadhu Ninda Animosity to the Vaisnava Remedy: Repentance Apology Respect This should be done even if the Vaisnava is not upset
If the Vaisnava is not satisfied with the apology one must simply chant the name continuously. If one chants but does not apologize, one commits further offense. If one does not apologize on the plea that the Vaisnava has faults, one commits further offense.
Misunderstanding the position of Visnu Visnu: independent Siva: independent but covered by gunas sometimes a jiva Brahma: an empowered jiva sometimes the Lord.
Sruti sastra ninda Disrespect for the sruti One should not criticize the sruti even though it recommends karma and jnana. Karma and jnana are processes for persons not qualified for bhakti. Remedy: Praise the sruti and its followers Chant the name
Anarthas arising from Bhakti By cultivation of bhakti one accrues material assets, worship, fame, and position. These items can become objects of attraction for the devotee and thus become anarthas.
Stage Sins or Punya Faulty Bhakti Bhajana Kriya eka desa vartini eka desa vartini bahu desa vartini bahu desa vartini Nistha purna purna Ruci atyantiki Asakti atyantiki Bhava Prema
Stage Nama Aparadha Bhajana Kriya eka desa vartini (slight) Nistha bahudesa vartini (more) Ruci Asakti Bhava prayiki (general) Prema purna (complete) Siddha atyantiki (absolute)
Condition for Gradual Purification This gradual destruction of anarthas takes place for persons who commit nama aparadha. Persons who utter namabhasa without aparadha destroy all anarthas immediately.
Effect of Aparadha ke te'paradha viprendra namno bhagavatah krtah vinighnanti nrnam krtyam prakrtam hy anayanti ca Oh best of brahmanas, what are the offenses against of the Name of the Lord which cancel the results of all ones performances, and turn everything material? Padma Purana
Effect of Aparadha Bhajana Kriya loses spiritual potency. Having lost taste for chanting, the only solution is to chant. By continued chanting the results of offense lessen and taste manifests. Qualification for bhakti appears and the person can then progress through sadhana to prema.
Devotees Suffering Even without offense, suffering and lack of prema may manifest. This is caused by the names quality of giving its fruit gradually not suddenly. Thus the suffering of devotees is not because of karma but because of the Lords arrangement.
