Provision Shops When we want to buy food, supermarket we go to a supermarket or a specialized provision shop. The grocer sells a variety of foodstuffs, such as flour, oil, eggs, biscuits, sugar, jams and jellies, spices, tinned and frozen foods. At the greengrocers youll buy fruits and vegetables. A Variety of Shops For fish we go to the fishmongers who will offer us salmon or trout, mackerel or herrings, lobsters or crabs. Supermarkets and department stores are large shops where various goods are sold under one roof and you can find nearly everything you need. These stores have lots of departments: e.g. stationery (where we can buy paper, ball pens, felt-tip pens and other useful things for office work), perfumery (with a wide choice of cosmetics to any taste: scents, face creams and powders, lipsticks, eye shadows, mascaras, plus soaps, shampoos and lotions to wash all these off)… Department Stores
Things to Wear If you dont want to walk barefoot, youll have to visit the footwear department. There youll find boots and high boots, rubbers and overshoes, high-heeled shoes and slippers, sandals and gym-shoes, shoelaces and what not! At the hosiery ['həuʒəri] department tights, socks and golf-stockings are sold. Clothes of different types are presented at the outfitters (mens, ladies or childrens outfitters).
If you dont want to go bareheaded, youll drop into the hat department to buy a hat or a cap. Women can find there different scarves or kerchiefs. To buy different items for needlework, embroidery or knitting (buttons, needles, zippers, reels of many-coloured cottons, ribbons and so on) youll have to drop into the haberdashery. Bolts, nails, scissors and screwdrivers are sold at the hardware department. At the electrical goods department you will find mixers, minces, toasters, blenders, irons, vacuum cleaners, heaters and other electrical items. When you see the word China in the name of the department, dont be surprised. At the china department you can buy vases, dishes or saucers from different countries of the world.
