Improve Your English English Idioms

HI,STUDENTS My name is Micky. I want to help you speak English well. Do you know anything about idioms? Lets talk about it.

Can you tell me what an idiom is? Well, read and try to understand it. Idiom is a succession of words whose meaning is not obvious through knowledge of the individual words but must be learnt as a whole (especially when not used literally). Идиома – это устойчивое выражение, которое имеет лексическое (смысловое) значение только в целом виде (не буквально).

Lets move on examples! Read the idiom aloud. Like water off a duck's back. Read the definition and try to understand it. Without producing any effect; without paying the slightest attention. Give a Russian equivalent. The picture can help you. Как с гуся вода.

Бояться собственной тени. Read. To be afraid of one's own shadow. Read and try to understand. To be unreasonably nervous due to groundless and trivial fears. Give a Russian equivalent. БОЯТЬСЯ СОБСТВЕННОЙ ТЕНИ.

Когда рак на горе свиснет Read. When pigs fly; when two Fridays come together. Read and try to understand. No one knows when; never. Give a Russian equivalent. Когда рак на горе свиснет.

Жить как кошка с собакой. Read. To fight like cats and dogs. Read and try to understand. To be constantly snapping, bickering and quarrelling. Give a Russian equivalent.

Биться как рыба об лед. Read. To pull the devil by the tail. Read and try to understand. To struggle desperately. Give a Russian equivalent. БИТЬСЯ КАК РЫБА ОБ ЛЕД

Вставать с петухами. Read. To rise with the lark/sun. Read and try to understand. To rise very early in the morning, at daybreak. Give a Russian equivalent. ВСТАВАТЬ С ПЕТУХАМИ

Мухи не обидит. Read. He wouldn't hurt/harm a fly; he won't say "boo" to a goose. Read and try to understand. He/she is meek, timid, gentle, kind. Give a Russian equivalent. МУХИ HE ОБИДИТ

Садиться на любимого конька. Read.. To mount/ride one's hobby/hobby-horse. Read and try to understand. To dwell on one's favourite topic; to be on one's pet subject. Give a Russian equivalent. САДИТЬСЯ НА ЛЮБИМОГО КОНЬКА

Поджать хвост. Read. To have/put one's tail between one's legs; to sing small. Read and try to understand. To become more cautious, circumspect; to cease boasting; to become less self- assured. Give a Russian equivalent. ПОДЖАТЬ ХВОСТ

Чертова дюжина. Read. A devil's/a baker's dozen. Read and try to understand. Thirteen. Give a Russian equivalent. ЧЕРТОВА ДЮЖИНА

Well done! Now your task is to give Russian equivalents to these idioms and draw pictures to them. Hungry as a hunter. Red as a lobster. He wouldn't hurt/harm a fly; he won't say "boo" to a goose. Close/dumb as an oyster; silent as a grave; tight-lipped. Someone's goose is cooked. To sleep like a log/top. To kill two birds with one stone.

GOOD LUCK !
