Unit: Canada Grade Level: 3 Lessons #1: Geography of Canada (Activities 1-2)

OBJECTIVES: The students will use the video Geography of Canada, the Internet, and library sources to learn about the provinces of Canada. The students will create maps of Canada, indicating the provinces, major urban center, and territories of Canada The students will compare and contrast the provinces of Canada by writing descriptive paragraphs of each province.

MATERIALS: Pencils, erasers, and rulers Fine point black pens (optional) Crayons, colored pencils, or markers (optional) Blank maps of Canada (one per student) Lined writing paper Computer with Internet access (optional) Geography of Canada video and VCR Geography texts and other library sources

Student Activities: Watch video discuss Canadas geographic divisions and the unique features of each province. Fill in blank map of Canada, indicating each province and territory, and all of Canadas major urban center. Write descriptive paragraph about each of Canadas provinces.

Unit: Canada Grade Level: 3 Lesson #2: The History of the Canadian Flag (Activity 3)

OBJECTIVES: The students will learn the history and evolution of the modern Canadian flag. The students will learn about all the flags that have flown over Canada and what they meant. The students will understand that when Canada designed and adopted its own flag, it reflected a change in the way Canadians viewed themselves. The students will design a flag that include symbols and colors that are important to them.

MATERIALS: Canadian flag St. Georges Cross Fleur-de-lis Royal Union Flag Canadian Red Ensign 8.5 x 11 paper Pencils, crayons, or markers

Student Activities: Discuss the history of the different flags the have represented Canada and the different designs submitted by Canadians for their current flag. Create personal flags using the paper and marker, pencils, or crayons.

Unit: Canada Grade Level: 3 Lesson #3: Animals and Birds of Canada (Activity 4)

OBJECTIVES: The students will use the book The Animals of Canada, the Internet, and library sources to learn about the different animals found in Canada. The students will select an animal and identify various aspects of that animal. The students will create a class book about the animals of Canada.

MATERIALS: Book- The Animals of Canada (copy for each child) Pencils, erasers, and rulers Crayons, colored pencils, or markers Construction paper Lined writing paper Computer with Internet access Animal texts and other library sources

Student Activities: Read The Animals of Canada together. Make a list of all the animals found in Canada on the board. Work in partners and research an Canadian animal or bird. Draw or find pictures of the animal and write a paragraph about the animal.

Unit: Canada Grade Level: 3 Lesson #4: Canadian Folk songs and Stories (Activity 5)

OBJECTIVES: The students will listen to and read various Canadian folk songs and stories. Focusing on The old lady who Swallowed a Fly. The students will create the main characters in the The Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. The students will act out the story using their characters. The students will research other Canadian folk songs and stories.

MATERIALS: Collection of Canadian folk songs and stories. Book - I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback Pencils, markers, crayons Construction paper Lined writing paper Odds and ends, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, wallpaper scraps, pompons, glitter, string Sturdy paper

Student Activities: Read I Know an Old lady Who Swallowed a Fly, and discuss all of the characters described in the story. The students will create the characters of the story and act out the story.

The History of Canadas Flag ST.GEORGES CROSS: Carried over by Cabot in 1497 when he reached the east coast of Canada. FLEUR-DE-LIS: Flown by the French when Canadian land was claimed for the King of France.

The History of Canadas Flag ROYAL UNION: Replaced the Fleur-de-lis after 1759 when Canada was ceded to the United Kingdom. RED ENSIGN: Combined with the Royal Union and the Canadian Shield of Arms. Variations of this flag were flown from 1870 until 1965.
