Translation of Interview Matt: Do you agree that Russian rock music has political themes? Matt: Do you agree that Russian rock music has political themes? Rotkin: Perhaps, it had political themes. Political themes in rock music started to arise with the epoch of the Soviet Regime. With the fall of the Soviet regime, most of the politically-oriented music and songs were lost. People now are not interested in these ideas in the sense that they were 5, 10, even 15 years ago. Rotkin: Perhaps, it had political themes. Summary In order to expand upon knowledge that I gained in Russian Conversation and Composition, I interviewed a native Russian speaker, Dr. Slava Rotkin, a professor of physics at Lehigh University. The interview was centered around two main topics, Russian rock music and student life in Russia, both of which were extensively discussed as part of the class curriculum. The interview was conducted in Russian. I transcribed and transliterated sections of the interview that pertained to information studied in class. I developed a list of new vocabulary words and questions. These sections of the interview were presented to my class and I lead a brief discussion based upon information in the interview and previous topics discussed in class. Not only was this interview beneficial for increasing my own knowledge of the subject area and language skills, but it helped to contextualize the information for other members of my class as well as better their listening comprehension.
