Air pollution is a very serious problem. In big cities more and more factories, cars and trucks add their bad breath to the air. In Cairo just breathing the air is life threatening – equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for Mexico City and very many big cities in the world. The seas and other bodies of water are in danger, too. They are filled with poison; industrial and nuclear wastes, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The Mediterranean is already dead, the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. Satellite observations of the earth have revealed that 60 per cent of land surface is damaged by industrial agricultural and other human activities Be kind to nature

Industrial enterprises emit tons of harmful substances. Chemicals called sulfates puff out of coal-burning factories around the world. When the sulfates mix with clouds, acid rain falls and harms lakes, rivers and plants and the creatures that need them. Acid rain can travel thousands of miles with the wind. And even greater environmental threat are nuclear power stations. We all know how tragic the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are. Farmers often spray chemicals crops to protect them against pests. These chemicals are called pesticides. Scientist have found that pesticides often end up in our food. Pesticides can cause health problems – especially for kids. But there is the good news: the U.S. and some European governments are helping farmers to find ways to protect crops without using pesticides. Around the Earth there is a special type of oxygen called ozone. Ozone is important because it stops ultraviolet radiation from the sun. many aerosol sprays and factories destroy ozone and they have made a very big hole in the ozone layer. This means that too much ultraviolet radiation now enters earth. This is very dangerous because it can cause cancer. Around the Earth there is a special type of oxygen called ozone. Carbon dioxide in the air has increased a lot. Carbon dioxide comes from burning oil, coal and wood. This has formed a blanket around the Earth. The heat from the sun cannot escape and so the temperature is rising – the greenhouse effect. This means that the level of the sea is rising and the climate is changing. Greenhouse is not a green house!

The world has over 9 million square km of forests. But they are disappearing fast. Every year over 100,000 sq. km of forest is so badly damaged that it is very hard for it to recover. In fact, the rate of destruction is increasing, so in only just over 30 years there will be very little forest left in most areas. This includes rainforests in Madagascar, Ecuador, Amazonia, Cameroon, the Himalayas and the Philippines. Forests are very important for us. We need them! The trees and other plants in the forest help to make the air that we breath. They also help to control the weather. They give us wood, rubber, fruits and many of our medicines. Lets protect forests!

In many countries especially poor ones the population is rising very quickly. These cause problems with food and dangerous diseases. We are Globemates!
