The principal parts of the sentence are the subject and the predicate.

The subject is mostly expressed by a noun or a personal pronoun. It is also expressed by any substantivized part of speech, by a phrase or a subordinate clause.

Depending on the character of the subject sentences are divided into personal, indefinite- personal and impersonal.

Personal-(особові): the subject of a personal sentence denotes a certain person, thing or abstract notion.

Особовим називають речення, підмет якого означає певну особу, предмет або абстрактне поняття. Where is the doctor? The shop was closed.

The subject of the indefinite- personal sentence may be expressed by the pronouns one, they, you, we, when they refer to people in general, to any person or to an indefinite number of persons.

f.E One never can be sure. You never can tell what will happen. Before the names of seas we use the definite article.

The predicate of an impersonal sentence does not refer to any person or thing. The pronoun it is used as a formal subject of impersonal sentences.

Безособовим називають таке речення, присудок якого не відноситься ні до особи, ні до предмета чи абстрактного поняття. В англ. pеченнях є формальний підмет, виражений займенником it, який ставиться на початку речення.

In the negative form the pronoun no or not…any is used.

There are the following kinds of predicate in English: the simple verbal predicate, the compound verbal predicate and the compound nominal predicate.

The simple verbal predicate is a predicate expressed by a finite form of the verb in any tense, voice and mood.

Простий дієслівний присудок- це присудок, виражений особовою формою дієслова в будь-якому часі, стані і способі: She knows nothing about me. What did he say?

The compound verbal predicate consists of: a) a modal verb combined with an infinitive: b) a verb with a modal meaning combined with an infinitive or gerund; c) a verb denoted the beginning, duration or end of an action combined with an infinitive or gerund.

Складений дієслівний присудок - це присудок, виражений: а) модальним дієсловом у сполученні з інфінітивом чи герундієм; б) дієсловом з модальним значенням у сполученні з інфінітивом чи герундієм;в) дієсловом, що означає початок, продовження чи закінчення дії в сполученні з інфінітивом або герундієм:

f.E I can do it. He must come back tomorrow. He wants to work here. We began to learn English three years ago. The pupils went on writing. The child stopped crying.

The compound nominal predicate consists of a link-verb and a predicate ( the nominal part of the predicate). The predicative is mostly expressed by a noun or an adjective.

Іменний складений присудок складається з дієслова-звязки ( the link-verb) та іменної частини- предикатива(the predicative) Дієсловом - звязкою найчастіше буває to be бути, яке на відміну від української мови не випускається в теперішньому часі:

f.E The day was sunny. The Law of Work Collectives is an act of great political, economic and social significance.

It can also be expressed by a pronoun, a numeral, an adverb and non-finite forms of the verb.

f.E. The book is mine. My sister is fifteen today. He was the first to get up.
