For centuries, women have served their families by preparing food, making clothes, and performing other tasks to make homes for their husbands and children. As times have changed and economic opportunities shifted from the farms to the factories, the roles of women began to gradually develop. Instead of staying home and producing goods for the family, women began looking for occupations outside of the house

. While many women worked intraditionally "female" occupations such as teaching and nursing, many women began working in factories or low-paying office work done by clerks and labourers. As a result, the industrial revolution forever changed the way the economy operated, and with that change, more women chose to work and supplement

Emmeline Pankhurst (July 1858 – 14 June 1928) was an English political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement, which helped women win the right to vote. In 1999, Time named Pankhurst as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating: "she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back".

Harriet Quimby (May 1, 1875 – July 1, 1912) was an early American aviator and a movie screenwriter. In 1911 she was awarded a U.S. pilot's certificate by the Aero Club of America, becoming the first woman to gain a pilot's license in the United States. Less than a year later she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Although Quimby lived only to the age of thirty-seven, she had a major influence upon the role of women in aviation.

International Women's Day, originally called International Working Womens Day is marked on the 8th of March every year.It is a major day of global celebration of women. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women. The first IWD was observed on 19 March 1911 in Germany following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America.
