Those who have not tasted the bitterest of lifes bitters can never appreciate the sweetest of lifes sweets Big ideas: Taste helps us, among other things, to select and to enjoy food. There are four familiar tastes.

READ THE ARTICLE Tasting and smelling work very closely together. If you cant smell your food, it is difficult to recognize the taste. You may have noticed this when youve had a bad cold with a stuffed up nose. Tasting is the work of your tongue. All over your tongue are tiny taste sensors called buds. If you look at your tongue in a mirror, you can see the small groups of taste buds. They are what give your tongue its rough appearance. Each taste bud has a small opening in it. Tiny pieces of food and drink enter this opening. There are taste sensors gather information about the taste and send messages to your brain. Your brain decides what the taste is.

Sensitive writing You and your sister decide to concoct a new drink. You mix all the carbonated drinks in refrigerator into your mums blender. Then you add strawberries, bananas, tomatoes. Last, you throw in a raw egg, a cup of milk, and some ice. As the blender crushes the mixture into a drink, you and your sister argue over who will have to taste it first. You lose. Describe the taste of that first swallow.

Learn the names of foods brought in and words for qualities of tastes and texture.words peanut butter jelly honey pieces of fruit crackers pickles raw vegetables bread pudding applesauce nuts pasta cheese lemon juices sardines popcorn olives

GAME Write the names of the food on the blackboard.Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. One student in each group is blindfolded, who pinches his nose and tasted the food, guessing what it is. Then he smells it and tasted it again, changing the guess if needed. He must describe the texture and how it smell and tastes. The others write down the items and the guess, and let him know what it really is. When 5 items have been presented, the blindfold is taken off and another student wears the blindfold.
