2 Tourism tourists Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people "traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes".
3 The terms tourist and tourism were first recognized in 1937 by the League of Nations
4 The word travel comes from the medieval English word travail which means suffering great hardship, and that is a very good description of travel in its earliest days.
5 In 2010, there were 940 million international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 6.6% as compared to 2009.
