Jacques Cartier In 1534 King Francis I sent French explorer Jacques Cartier to find a northwest passage to the Spice Islands. Cartier explored the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and regions now known as Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Montreal. Much of the French claim to Canada was based on Cartiers explorations.
