1 STYLISTICS Stylistics (sometimes called linguo-stylistics) is a philological science which deals with two independent tasks: 1) the investigation of the inventory of special language media with the help of which the author can send his message to the reader and produce the desirable effect of the utterance; 2) the investigation of certain types of texts which due to the choice and arrangement of language means are distinguished by the pragmatic aspect of communication.

2 The updated syllabus of this course provides an insight into both structural and cognitive understanding of stylistic entities and phenomena, into multi-aspect differentiation of speech registers, as well as into different contemporary approaches to text interpretation.

4 The tasks of the course explaining students basic notions, concepts and problems of stylistics, instructing them how to identify and analyse linguostylistic phenomena in the literary and other registers of language, helping students to acquire philological competence in interpretation of the text as an artistic whole, improving students general knowledge of English (at all of its struc-tural levels) and developing their critical viewpoint upon stylistic peculiar-ities of language use.

5 As a result of studying the course of English Stylistics students are expected to: distinguish stylistic categories and phenomena from those of other linguistic disciplines, comment upon functional roles of expressive means and stylistic de-vices in speech and discourse products, know various approaches to stylistic differentiation of the English language,

6 - choose units of different functional styles in accordance with appropriate linguistic contexts, understand the literary text as a multi-layer construct and an open system that requires manifold approaches to its interpretation, be philologically competent in applying linguostylistic and other types of analysis to the literary text.

7 By the end of the course students should be able to present well-rounded interpretations of sample texts in the module test and at the examination.

8 РЕЙТИНГ Посещаемость – 1 х 16 занятий = 16 баллов (8- лекции, 8 – семинары) Развернутый ответ на текущем семинарском занятии – 5 баллов (max – 10) Своевременное выполнение домашних заданий – 2 х 10=20 баллов Рубежная аттестация – 14 баллов Реферат (включая презентацию) – 15 баллов за своевременную подготовку. Стилистический анализ - 10 баллов Итоговая аттестация – 15 баллов.

9 Требования к оформлению реферата (1) Структура реферата включает: – Титульный лист – Содержание – Введение – Основная часть – Заключение – Список использованной литературы и источников

10 Текст основной части делится на главы, разделы или параграфы, здесь излагается содержание работы. В основной части целесообразно выделение 2-3 вопросов, отражающих разные аспекты темы. В реферате важно привести различные точки зрения на проблему и дать им оценку.

11 В заключении подводятся итоги рассмотрения темы. Приветствуется определение автором перспективных направлений по изучению проблемы. Сноски на источники, цитаты даются внизу страницы, на которой они приводятся или в конце текста.

12 Список использованной литературы дается в алфавитном порядке и должен содержать не менее 10 источников (включая современные статьи), оформляется согласно ГОСТ Р –2008. В тексте реферата каждому из разделов должен предшествовать заголовок. Текст реферата должен быть тщательно выверен, содержать научную лексику и соответствовать нормам литературного языка.

13 Требования к оформлению реферата (2) Список использованной литературы дается в алфавитном порядке и должен содержать не менее 10 источников, оформляется согласно ГОСТ Р –2008. В тексте реферата каждому из разделов должен предшествовать заголовок.

14 Требования к оформлению реферата (3) Объем реферата должен составлять не менее 20 страниц Требования к оформлению: –реферат выполняется на листах бумаги формата А4 (ориентация – альбомная); –текст размещается на одной стороне листа в виде таблицы на русском и английском языках; –текст набирается на компьютере шрифтом TimesNewRoman; –размер шрифта – 14 пт; –межстрочный интервал – 1,5 пт; –цвет шрифта должен быть черным; –поля: левое – 3 см., правое – 2 см., верхнее – 2 см., нижнее – 2 см; –сноски постраничные или концевые согласно ГОСТ Р – 2008; –страницы реферата брошюруются и нумеруются арабскими цифрами с соблюдением сквозной нумерации по всему тексту. Номер ставится в нижнем правом углу страницы.

Trying to be good is underlined by the parallel constructions the effect of which is marred by humour.

20 The scheme of stylistic analysis-1 1. Speak about the author of the text and his literary activity. 2. Give a short account of the text. 3. Give your observations as to the functional style, and if it is a belles-lettres style name the genre of the story (novel): social, psychologi- cal, historical, detective, science fiction, documentary. Prove your reasons.

Point out the exposition, the setting, the climax and the denouement. Define the theme. 6. Speak about the title, the beginning and the end of the text.
