What is the situation with the newspapers in Russia nowadays? There are so many editions that it is impossible to count them. Dailies, weeklies, monthlies are at your disposal. There are 'quality' newspapers, which publish serious articles, dedicated to politics and economics. There are also the so called 'tabloids', where you can find very few news items, but a lot of pictures, entertainment, personalities and crime stories. You can subscribe to some newspapers, others you can only buy (at news-stands). There are also newspapers which are distributed free in the streets or dropped into mail-boxes. A lot of people have stopped subscribing to newspapers. Some of them can't afford it any more, some of them try to avoid the stress they can get reading newspapers and some are satisfied with television. Nowadays there is a fierce competition among the newspapers. They organise all kinds of lotteries, prize contests, tours and so on to attract as many readers as possible. A special question is that of financial support of the press. The newspapers are no longer supported by the state, so they have to look for financial backers and publish a lot of advertisements.
